Parents: Apple Bloom, Diamond Tiara

Ruby is the soft-spoken, often grumpy, mildly socially inept son of Apple Bloom and Diamond Tiara. He doesn’t show a great deal of emotion in his voice or expressions, but carries a haughty bluntness that makes it clear what he thinks about anypony he’s talking to—and normally he doesn’t think too highly of them. Ruby is extremely skeptical of everypony and everything, but is ultimately a logical stallion and is perfectly content to be proven wrong, assuming that one wants to keep trying to spend time with him after their first meeting.

Despite what other ponies often think, he has no particular disdain towards the concept of friendship or relationships, he just has no strong desire to make them happen, either. Ruby would rather spend his time with a calculator in hoof—he’s indifferent towards others, essentially, as he finds interpersonal relationships too inconsistent. Books and math, especially math, are much more consistent. Due to this passion towards learning, quietness, and disregard for others, Ruby tends to come across as a know-it-all, a calculating creep, or a creepy, calculating know-it-all. Which, to be fair, he is—Ruby knows that he comes off as a jerk, but ultimately doesn’t mind. Those ponies that he does let get to know him don’t seem to care, after all.

Relationships:

As much as they love him, Ruby’s parents aren’t sure that they get him. Apple Bloom had expected him to show a bit more of his Apple side, but Ruby never even made an attempt to buck a tree unless he absolutely had to. However, she knows cutie marks and destinies better than anypony, and is happy with her little accountant if he’s happy (especially because she doesn’t have to fret over the farm’s money herself anymore). Diamond Tiara sees a resemblance to her father in her son, and understands him a little bit more for it, although both mothers think he could do with being a bit more social and a bit less cold. Additionally, it is expected in the Apple family that every foal learn an instrument, and Ruby plays the violin.

Ruby’s longest-lasting friendship is with, surprisingly, the youngest of Celestia’s children, Princess Alto Stratus. They met on Ruby’s kindergarten class’s field trip to Canterlot Castle, where he found himself being constantly pestered by the princess for reasons he wasn’t sure of. She was pushy and strange, but came across as very intelligent, so he let her show him around and later bid her a pleasant farewell, having enjoyed their time spent together. When she started showing up at his doorstep every Saturday with a picnic and a fiery determination in her eyes that he couldn’t quite pinpoint, Ruby was a little bit disturbed—however, he welcomed further conversation with her. This odd companionship continued well into their adulthood, and Ruby found himself developing strong feelings towards the alicorn. It had occurred to him that he would (he was aware that spending a great deal of time with a pretty girl was known to do that). Ruby confessed his love to her with no hesitation, and was happy to find that she felt the same way—which she informed him of by pouncing on him, but he got the message. Despite her genuine love for him, Alto is scared for her reputation if word gets out that she’s dating a random farm boy from Ponyville, and insists for years that they keep their relationship a secret. Ruby doesn’t mind one way or the other, he’s with a mare that he loves, who cares if she doesn’t let the tabloids hear about it?

Greyscale, daughter of Silver Spoon and Spike, made an impression on Ruby when they met in school: she annoyed him. He already had one friend, Alto, and had no desire for another one, especially since she only seemed to be offering him companionship based on their mothers’s existing friendship. He brushed her off, and didn’t think of her again until later in the school year, when Greyscale began noticeably surpassing him in class—specifically, her writing skills were beyond his. Ruby decided that perhaps she would make a valuable acquaintance after all, and reintroduced himself to her, asking to borrow her notes. She was visibly confused, but he didn’t notice. They quickly found out that they shared a major interest of Grey's, the works of H.P. Hoofcraft, and bonded over a shared love of reading.

Ruby stops dead in his tracks the moment he lays eyes on his arch nemeses, Acoustic Performance and Carpe Diem. Their mothers tried to make their sons the best of friends, but to no avail. The problem between the three boys are all down to their personalities, it seems as if they were destined not to get along. Carpe Diem is a confrontational hothead, Ace is a cocky diva, and Ruby is a calculating ball of contempt. Put them together, and you get an explosion of an argument that can be heard all the way to Canterlot, every single time. Ruby rarely sees Ace anymore as an adult, as he’s off with his band, but, as they share a friend in Greyscale, he has to try much harder to avoid the pegasus.

His cousins are all varying levels of unpalatable to Ruby. Applejack‘s son Harvey is an absolute oaf, and he’d much prefer that the pegasus keep to his guitar playing or whatever it is he does than bother him. Braeburn’s son Wild Wes is viscerally offensive, with endless energy and seeming blindness to boundaries... however, although he wouldn’t admit it, Ruby quite appreciates that nothing he says can ever seem to dampen the colt’s mood. He’s not sure he wants to tell him and risk encouraging his behavior, but Ruby actually finds himself enjoying his cousin’s company a lot. Wes’s sister Swifty Scuffles is the most consistently tolerable of his extended family, in that she never tries to bother him, but is also of least interest.

Although he keeps it to himself for her sake, Ruby cannot stand Alto’s personal guard (or, one of them), Lavender Lush. The stallion drives him absolutely insane, with his slimy, subtle, plotting behavior and constant words of respect for the princess and himself. At all times he comes across as deeply condescending, which Ruby absolutely cannot stand. He’s at a loss for now nopony else can see through Lavender—as far as Ruby is concerned, the guard is an embarrassing sycophant trying to climb the ranks purely to improve his own social standing. If that wasn’t offensive enough for Ruby... well, he hits on his girlfriend! He would never have agreed to this secrecy if he’d known it would mean ‘no punching Lavender.’
