Description
“Why does King Scar get mad when I play with Nuka, Mom? Nuka likes me—does Scar not like me?”“It isn’t you, Anza. He’s just never liked me much.”
Twana is Scar and Mufasa’s cousin (step-cousin?), the stepdaughter of their uncle, Auni. Scar had a... complex relationship with Auni, who started off as a father figure and ended up being the only one who fully understood the kind of terrible lion Scar was. As such, even after the death of his uncle, Scar has complex feelings towards Auni’s part of the family.
For the most part, he just tries to keep away from Twana, her mother Unamosa, and Twana’s daughter, Anza. He doesn’t exactly hate them (they never tried to keep him from the throne, and they don’t interfere with his life), but their presence bothers him. It’s a nagging reminder that his uncle lived, and influenced him and others. Scar has the means to kill them, of course—with Shenzi’s clan around, he has the means to kill anybody—but he knows better than to kill off his minor problems; the mysterious deaths of anybody he takes issue with would get the pride’s eyes on him, in a very bad way. So he simply keeps his distance—but he does step in if he feels he has to. Nuka has Shabaha, Tazama, and Imara to play with, he does not need to socialize with this cub. The reminder of the past is bad enough as it is.
Unamosa, Twana, and little Anza are quite aware of the king’s distaste for them, and the former two are aware of Scar’s past, both with Auni, and the killing of the Lion Guard. Like the rest of the pride, they’ve been convinced that he changed his ways, so they don’t fear he’ll hurt them. Since they don’t have all the facts about Scar and therefor about his falling out with Auni, they really don’t understand why he seems to dislike them so much. This all does hurt Twana’s feelings. She never did anything to him, and it isn’t her fault that he never made up with Auni. But, since Scar doesn’t seem interested in making peace, she respects that he wants to remain somewhat estranged.
Except, after having Anza, Twana has been more fearful of Scar. It’s not that he started bothering her, but—well, she had initially intended to name her daughter ‘Auni’, as she had been very close with her stepfather. But when she brought this up to Scar (he was still family, and she wanted him to know), he got unreasonably mad, and insisted that she find another name. Frightened by his outburst, she did as she was told, but she and her mother were shocked and confused. They were aware by this point in his reign that Scar was not a great king, but they’d not thought him especially hostile or dangerous.
Ever since, Twana does her best to keep Anza away from Scar. She doesn’t fear he’ll hurt her daughter—he’s not good at ruling a kingdom, but he’s no child killer, surely!—it’s just that... well, she fears it a little, but irrationally! Either way, Anza can’t be allowed to play with Nuka, and she ought not be seen playing with the other cubs too much, either, as they’re all the children of Scar’s friends. Twana hates these limitations she feels forced to place on her daughter, but she wants to keep her safe....

Couple of notes: yes, Anza is the “my, how you’ve grown!” lioness, from TLK2
