Suffice it to say that Steele and Isa's relationship wasn't all that smooth while it lasted. Ultimately it's his behavior toward their pups, particularly the girls, that drives her away. They end up fighting and eventually grow tired of each other. Steele takes their boys, who pretty much idolize him, and goes his way while Isa hangs onto their daughters. It's for the best, but it takes it's toll on her confidence, but mom's really good at hiding her feelings and nobody knew.

This is a 'pre-puppies' scene, where Steele's fast asleep and curled protective over his smol waifu, but probably having nightmares about wolves eating his musher or something. Isa on the other hand is unable to sleep and so stays awake staring at the ceiling. She's vaguely aware of the red-flags in their relationship but trying to ignore them or push them out of her mind.

But who knows? Maybe the journey of fatherhood and familial loss will cause Steele to finally get over himself. Or not.

And just to clarify, Isa is a fully grown adult. She's just rather small for a husky and has always had rather short and smooth fur. And of course, Steele is a huge, well-fed and premium bred sled-dog. He looks kinda goofy in my style, aw. I'll have to practice some more, I suppose.

I was also playing around with some slightly different shading techniques here.
