Learning how to scan is a must. Part of the issue is it looks like the images aren't laying flat in the scanner...

well, that's because it's in a book. No matter how hard I pressed, it didn't lay flat.

Books are tricky like that -- my usual trick is not to draw too close to the spine so it can sit outside of the scanner while you get the rest of the image.

Well, I didn't expect to scan them, but I decided at the last minute to do it.
Yeah, This is most likely why the second one worked out so much better.
