How do you work out the flat shapes for the 3D objects? Is it mostly guesswork or are you some sort of genius?

It's a pretty tedious process to be honest. Sketch after sketch and then I make a 3D model in a 3D program and then 'unfold' it in the nicest way possible.
Then it's printing it out and seeing where it needs tabls, holes, slits etc.
Then I decorate it in illustrator/photoshop.
It's pretty satisfying by the end of the whole ordeal.
