Description
Alternate Title: Who Blinks First Loses
Jo. Pic taken some time in late 1999, which would make Jo almost 3 years old. Female ♀
We call this "Jo's Listening Look".
The pupils of her eyes are fully dilated, even in bright daylight, as she's blind. The vet said there is no damage to the eyeballs, it's probably a problem with the nerve endings or the part of her brain that deals with sight. Guess that means the 'images' are not being transmitted to the brain.
She appeared in front of our home one day, about 8 or 9 months old, clean and well-fed and used to humans. We fed her and waited for a long time for somebody to come looking for her. We are almost certain she was abandoned. We were in the midst of moving and everything was topsy-turvy, so we made the decision to bring her in to the vet's to be spayed and left there for the two weeks while she healed from the surgery. She contracted an infection whilst there, and it must have spread to her brain and affected her eyesight.
One strange change in her behaviour after she lost her sight - she refuses to bend her head to eat from her feeding plate! We couldn't figure out why and we tried all ways we could think of to get her to eat. We failed. So, to this day (and she's 14+ now), we still hold her plate up to her mouth at feed times (or hand-feed her, depending on the nature of the food).
In answer too 's query "And she manages ok aorund the house just fine?" ...
"Surprising, she manages very well ... she can even climb staircases, goes outdoors to enjoy the sunshine, etc. And even when the human forgets and leaves a 'new' object in her path, she somehow manages to avoid it ... we think she must be using some other senses to help her sense the presence of things in her environment! The only times she actually runs into things are when there's a sudden loud noise somewhere near when she's out in the garden ... then, in her panic dash into the house and safety, she would sometimes run into things.
We try to keep her room a safe and 'unchanging' place for her so that she can feel secure in it ... every piece of furniture and object, including toilet tray and water bowls, have a designated spot; after each cleaning session, every piece is put back in its designated spot."

Hey, and now Jo has her very own stamp ... ... made specially for her by her fan

I went into your gallery to look for the 2 cats you mentioned ... and couldn't find them among the M-A-N-Y there!
Link me, please?

ahhh ... got it!
So Spice is the one with the heart defect and Tony is the Felv? Is Felv = FIV? I was told recently that FIV and FIP kitties born with it usually die by about 8 or 9 months - and that was the age that our FIV RockE died [link]

No! FIV cats can live as long as non positives. Felv cats normally live up to 3.5 years unless given immune injections and supplements. FIP is the one that is very bad and makes short lived cats.

Hm. That is odd (the eating thing). I remember when our oldest cat was a kitten, she liked to eat from our hands.
Would you happen to have one of those cat food stands you could put a plate on or something?

pergamjee In reply to Haru-chii [2011-01-22 03:49:37 +0000 UTC]
ahh, we have tried cat food stands, and other ways. It's quite alright, as the time spent with her during feeds is all part of bonding with her. News update - she has recently began to drink from the waterbowl placed on the floor ... after 13 years!
Thanks for the fave!

Actually, we don't feel that we have made many sacrifices. It may sound weird to you, but we feel like we have been blessed. As someone jokingly said, it's like the "cat goddess" is looking out for us!

Aww poor Jo. I'm glad she's done so well, though. Umber was probably completely blind or close to it by the time I had to put her down. She had glowing eyes, not as much as this, but definitely not normal. They never were quite normal. She may have had vision problems earlier, but was so good at hiding it we never knew. Though she must have been able to see, because she loved starting at my face. And up until the last few years of her life she would go batty if she saw a bug on the wall.

pergamjee In reply to RainySkyz [2010-12-24 22:26:24 +0000 UTC]
The glowing part is normal, I guess...when it is dark or in poor lighting, the pupils dilate and any little light gets reflected from the retina (I think). What's not normal, I guess, is that her eyes are dilated 24/7 because of her blindness. Yes, cats are brave and good at coping with their problems and it is sometimes very difficult to spot the problem.
ahhh...yes, if Umber was staring at your face and the bug on the wall, she must have been able to see. Jo doesn't do that...she "follows" you with her ear, tilting her head to listen.

Yes she is! But she can be full of claws and teeth at times. Maybe because she's blind, she likes close contact games. She wrestles with the toy we made for her, which is safe. But she also wrestles with her friend Ling and with us, which isn't safe! She would jump on our arm or whichever part of our anatomy is nearest (sometimes on top of our heads!) and dig her claws in, kicking and biting. ouch ouch. We would grab the toy we made and transfer her to that. Ling is endlessly patient with her - he never gets angry or gets back at her - he just yelps and run away!

She's older now and is less exuberant in her expressions of affection/play. And she can be extremely sweet and loving - she loves to be carried, and she'll lightly lick your neck when you stroke her. She likes to lay alongside your thigh and rest her head on you. So, she has her good points and her bad points (like 18 of them!! )
Thanks for the fave!

What a sweet little cat! Good for her that she still maintains a high quality of life even though she's blind!
There was a stray kitten who got a broken leg from a dog bite, and the leg was so infected, it was kinder to amputate. We adopted her because she can't live outside anymore. She is just such a happy cat, and pudgy because she eats like we never feed her! XD The only things she can't do are jumping (she can claw her way onto my mother-in-law's bed and the sofa) and using a scratching post. I love hearing stories about other cats who aren't "perfect" and are thriving in a happy home.

Aw, Mig... The poor little darling... ;_; But it looked like she had the best life with you guys!
We've gotten all our cats from the street. Now that all the strays/ferals are spay/neutered, we'll have to go to a shelter or Petsmart (their cats are raised by a foster, we put the adoptable stray kittens there, and they all got adopted).

wow! Your cat's 23! wow! Our oldest is 19 - she starting to develop cataract in one eye, but otherwise is going strong.
Is your cat's blood pressure under control? Is she under any medication/treatment? How does one tell when a cat is having high blood pressure? I had better find out so that I can look out for symptons in my cats.

FrellingBlonde In reply to pergamjee [2010-10-04 05:30:25 +0000 UTC]
18, actually. She was 13 when she went blind. Her blood pressure is controlled with medication. We suspected her eyesight was going so we took her to the vet, there were no symptoms that we could see of the high blood pressure, the vet figured that one out.
