Description Mo (awake) + Mi (asleep). Twenty days. Female ♀

We took them in when they were about two weeks old.
These orphans were rescued when they were about one week old, by the security staff of an office building, and given to a cat-loving lady who worked in that building. She had a demanding job that required very long hours, and so didn't have the time to feed them as often as was required. After one week, they didn't put on any weight, and even started having diaorrhoea (probably a reaction to the formula they were drinking). They would surely die if things continued that way. So we took them in.

After we had them a few days, we noticed that the strange hairless patches round their mouth were getting larger and started looking and feeling damp. You can see the 'teddy bear' patches in the pic. The vet said it was fungal infection, but they were too young and the medication for that would be too toxic for them.

We were getting desperate. We couldn't just standby and do nothing while they suffered. So we went to the library to do research (oh yah, those were our pre-internet days! )... and stumbled upon the remedy as noted in pic (6) below.

Given their history, we have no idea which of these sisters was the elder; but we always felt that Mo was, as she appeared more "big-sisterly" ^^ Maybe it was just that she was a little less frail than Mi, but it sure looks like big-sister-concern in this pic and in pic (3) and (4).

This is the part of a set of five pics taken on the same day, that tells a part of their story...

These pics taken days later showed the improvement ...

Somebodyelse said that she has such determine eyes, like she's saying, "We will survive!"

it's true, when an animal has opportunity to live, live

it's wonderful as they fight to live, when humans commit suicide... that is lamentable

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pergamjee In reply to BlacKumari [2011-03-26 07:59:58 +0000 UTC]

Yes indeed. I guess that's why in many societies and in many religions, committing suicide is considered a crime. I don't know what your belief system is, but I subscribe to the belief that to be born into this life as a human is in itself a privilege... it follows on then, that to commit suicide, one is then "wasting" this chance to do something meaningful with this life. But then, of course, when you start considering all sorts of possible reasons why a person might want to commit suicide, then it may get a little less clear.

ohhh ... I'm so sorry to hear that!
I hear so many similar stories hear on dA, and it saddens me everytime. I had sad cat experiences when I was a kid as my sister and I love cats but our family didn't. Those experiences made us vow never to have cats again until we are grown-up, living in a place of our own, and able to make our own decisions regarding the care of our cats. Well, now we have 18!! So, have heart and bear with it ... you are only 16 now? Hang on till you are older and have a place of your own, and can make your own decisions.

Well, my whole family love cats but since we're not-so-rich and our house is just a mere apartment, we had too give away four out of 5 of the kittens we had... But we kept the mommy cat and one of her baby(which has now grown up XD) and this neutered male cat. So, we're still happy even though during the time when we had to let them go was so sad...T^T i hope they have good lives with their new families...T^T

pergamjee In reply to kuraikitsune13 [2011-03-10 14:12:37 +0000 UTC]

We are not very good about letting go ... kills us to give up our cats. We tried 3 times with 3 different kittens, and each time, we took the kitten back because they were so unhappy at their new homes.

kuraikitsune13 In reply to pergamjee [2011-03-10 18:38:40 +0000 UTC]

ah...is that so? Pity them then... well, it always take them SOME time to get used to their new home...How long did you give them away before taking them back?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pergamjee In reply to kuraikitsune13 [2011-03-10 19:25:49 +0000 UTC]

Well, let's see ... Princess was 3 years, Snowball was 3 years, and Harriet was almost 8 years ... was that long enough?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kuraikitsune13 In reply to pergamjee [2011-03-10 19:43:51 +0000 UTC]

uh...I think you misunderstood.I meant, how many days/weeks/months did you leave the kittens at their new owners' home before taking them back, since they looked very miserable?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pergamjee In reply to kuraikitsune13 [2011-03-10 20:15:32 +0000 UTC]

yes, that's what I meant ... they were given away when they were about 8 weeks old, and they were at their new homes 3 years, 3 years, and 8 years before we took them back. Their stories are long and complicated. Snowball is 8 now, Princess is 16, and Harriet died a few years ago when she was 13. We are glad we did take them back (Princess was practically "stolen" back!) so that they could spend their last years in peace.

pergamjee In reply to kuraikitsune13 [2011-03-11 00:32:17 +0000 UTC]

It's more like we are the can't-let-go type. Fortunately, or unfortunately, the kitties were given to people we know, to households that we visit, so there was no way we could avoid knowing what was going on.

Snowball was well-loved by his new human, and was very happy for a time. Then when he became a full-grown male, the apha-male in that household started picking on him. And these were not little tiffs or fisticuffs, but full-blown entanglements. Snowball has been back with us 5 years already, and his upper lip still bears a scar from that time. Princess was so terrified in her household that she practically lived in a pet-carrier-basket, venturing out only to eat/drink/toilet. Now she wanders freely in the garden and the house, and even lords it over her younger siblings. Harriet was so heavily victimised by the bully-cats in her household that she lived on the top platform of a scratching-post, and she could never sleep deeply. It was a joy to see her sprawling in deep sleep once she learned that it was safe to do so in this household.

oh wow!! so, the kittens had been quite unhappy at their previous households then! I'm glad you took them back before worse things happen...and luckily u gave them to people you know so you can keep watch on them....Unlike me, we gave the cats to people we dont know, so we cant keep up much with their progress...Its so sad....T^T

Well, as my mum once said, there should be a breed of cats that stay small like kittens all their lives

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pergamjee In reply to Gingers-PL [2011-02-19 02:21:23 +0000 UTC]

hahaha ... tell your mum you have found them! These girls are practically minature cats - they never grew bigger than a regular 8/9 month old. They are stray cats, of no determinable breed, but they were orphaned and rescued at about 3 days old, by well-meaning people who don't know how to look after such young kittens, then taken-in by a very busy career-woman who didn't have the time to look after them properly. Maybe that period of undernourishment during the critical young age has something to do with the fact that they never grew big!

Here are a couple of pics taken last year, when Mo was already 12 years old

I showed these photos to my mum - she thought that kitteh was a year old or so
yeah, it's probably because of undernourishment and lack of attention (?)

BTW, there's a stray she-cat wandering around our summer house, who is at least 5 or 6 years old, but looks like 6 month old

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pergamjee In reply to Gingers-PL [2011-02-19 17:24:57 +0000 UTC]

lol... I didn't know that the more attention you shower on a cat, the bigger it grows!!

aahhh ... so you have a minature-cat there too!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Gingers-PL In reply to pergamjee [2011-02-19 18:39:21 +0000 UTC]

Well, I think the well-being of a cat sorta depends on the time it spends with loving people around you can't deny the fact that cats can be attention whores sometimes

man, I'll burn in hell for speaking poorly about cats
