Description This section of the horse color genetics series I'm working on explains the genetics of black horses. Black is a result of a recessive agouti mutation, causing black pigment to be completely unrestricted and have no red pigment on the coat. Black coats can fade in the sun, which can cause the appearance of reddish areas on the fur on a genetically black horse.

The genotype for a black-based horse is E/_ with a/a in extension and agouti.
