Hello! It’s me PeridottoPuffu, and I’m back with another Versus, this time being a bit of a shorter one of Crash of the Titans and Crash: Mind Over Mutant!

I ended up having some extra time due to me finishing the April Fools Day review in less time than I anticipated, and I also haven’t reviewed a Crash game since… July of 2021, so I figured I’d do this one now since it’s been long overdue. These two games are also often considered to be the Sonic Boom of the series, and they were also the last Crash games before the big gap until the N. Sane Trilogy and were also the last mainline-ish games in the series for me to play (although I first played Crash of the Titans a little bit after I did Twinsanity, so Mind Over Mutant took me significantly longer to get to because I just never really found a good time to do it until now). And so, after a long wait, here’s my Versus of Crash of the Titans and Crash: Mind Over Mutant!

(I should also mention that while both games also have versions on the Wii and XBox 360 as well as the GBA, DS, and PSP, I played both games on the PS2.)

First up, we have the plots! In Crash of the Titans, Cortex kidnaps Coco so she can help him build a robot called the Doominator, so Crash has to stop both Cortex and Nina and save Coco and Wumpa Island. In Mind Over Mutant, Cortex and N. Brio give everyone a VR headset called an NV that mutates them into monsters, so Crash has to save both Coco and Crunch and stop Cortex yet again. I think both game’s plots are pretty good, and I also really like both of their writing and dialogue, but I don’t think I’d put one over the other. WINNER: A tie!

Next, we have the gameplay and bosses! Crash of the Titan’s gameplay follows a pretty similar setup and structure to previous Crash games, with there being a list of linear levels to complete with a fixed camera and platforming, but it has a larger focus on combat against enemies and also includes the ability to ride and control specific enemies called Titans as well as experience called Mojo to increase Crash’s stats and learn new moves. For the most part, I think this game’s gameplay is alright and works well enough, but I didn’t like how every now and then they’d put you in a situation where you need to beat a group of Titans to progress but there’d be so many of them that actually beating them is really difficult, and I also didn’t like the fight with Uka Uka both because the fight itself is really hard and also because you have to redo the level leading up to it if you game over. Mind Over Mutant carries over most of the base gameplay from the first game, but instead of having a level select, you run around in one big hub area and follow along with the story in a similar way to Twinsanity, and they also removed lives and added the ability to level up the Titans with collected Mojo too. Overall, I prefer the gameplay of Mind Over Mutant because it has a bit more exploration and is also more balanced difficulty-wise, and once you know what to do in it I also think it has the better final boss, but the problem I had with the first game making you beat groups of Titans to proceed does pop up close to the end of this game too, and I also really didn’t enjoy the fight with Crunch and N. Brio. WINNER: Mind Over Mutant!

Finally, we have the music and voice acting as well as the visuals! I don’t really remember the music of either game, but I really liked both of their voice acting and think they paired with how the characters were written really well. I also like both games visually, and while I know a lot of people weren’t too happy about the character redesigns, I don’t personally mind them all that much (although the one that bugs me a bit is Tiny because he’s basically a different character altogether). Also, they decided to make every cutscene in Mind Over Mutant 2D animated with a different art style for each one, and they’re pretty great :3 WINNER: Mind Over Mutant!

And that about does it for my Versus of Crash of the Titans and Crash: Mind Over Mutant! Both games are alright and have some good elements to them, but I overall prefer Mind Over Mutant of the two, and I think both that game and Twinsanity were the two mainline games in the series that I enjoyed the most. As for whether or not I’d recommend them, I once again like the second game more personally and think it’s more balanced in terms of difficulty, but if you play one, then you may as well also play the other, so I’d still recommend them both.
