At first it bothered me that Ruby and Sapphire as individuals, who I quite liked in their past appearances, are suddenly completely useless and unable to do anything when separated, to the point that if the Rubies hadΒ been here for the reason everyone thought, the Crystal Gems would have been screwed. Being Garnet is supposed to make two good things an even better whole. In the season one finale, it turned out that the gem with the most strength and biggest heart is the leader, warrior, friend, and surrogate mom that she is because she is "made of love." NotΒ a form that's a crutch used by two helpless characters who can't do anything. But, I eventually forced myself to relax, to say "it's just a comical baseball episode in a kids' cartoon."
...And due to the episode length, by then it was almost over.Β So on the secondΒ viewing a few days later, this episode became one of the funniest and one I'm sure I'll be rewatching more than a few times.

they just love each other so much, it's extremely hard for them to be separated without constantly talking to each other. sapphire said, "i'm trying, but all i want to look at is you". and she meant it. they just can't help it. they've been permanently fused for over 5000 years. it's not like they'll be able to think about anything else in the little time they unfuse
