Description This is my friend from high school, Tobias. He's currently in the opera program at Juilliard. I decided that I wanted to change the dismal balance of my bank account by taking headshots for the theater majors at my school, and I asked him if he would like to exchange a new set of free headshots for helping me build a portfolio to show potential clients. Thankfully, he had time to meet with me and I got some great shots.

I gray scaled this one for him, but I like the colored version.

I like this one out of all of them, though the right side of the photo shows that the brick actually ends. I don't know, this one still kinda bugs me though. It shows too much of the model. To me, a headshot is exactly what it says "head shot." After taking the Intro to Theatre class at NU I recall having the profs say that the actors have to put all that information on the back of the print... height, weight, all that good stuff. Perhaps a closer shot would have more ideal. I noticed in the ones with the pillars there was a bit too much headroom. And although he is wearing something "plain" I think a suit is too formal for a theatre headshot. I failed to notice NU's male theatre majors' headshots, but the female's photos were much more "plainer" and less detailed...if you know what I mean.

I know, the bricks ending bugs me too, but it looks even weirder cropped out and I don't know why....

Before I did this, I looked up some articles on taking headshots and most said that you present a real headshot (shot of your head) at first, and if they want more, you give them other stuff. I don't know the theater aspect of it, so I just gave him a variety that he could use. As for the suit: I left it up to him for what he should wear (he knows what he needs) and he's an opera singer, so I guess formal is better?

This one is by far one of the better ones that you did! Although there appears to be a bit of noise on his dark blue jacket, overall the composition and expression are great, even though it's a bit larger than a headshot.

Thanks. And headshots aren't just faces, they have to show off all one's good qualities to casting directors. In Toby's case, good qualities mean: broad shoulders and good arms.

I noticed the noise too and it made me a bit angry. Oh well, you win some, you lose some.
