Description This is my street the day after we had a snow storm, not a bad one, but let's just say you wouldn't've wanted to go out driving. Personally, I think this is one of the best photos I've ever taken, and the fact that it's film makes it even more amazing. And I don't know why, but I love the grain in the clouds and think it makes the photo even better.

~

My friends know that I am a stalwart proponent of digital cameras. Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of using light sensitive paper in the darkroom, but I never really got the hang of film; for one thing, I always manage to get my finger in the picture, which is pretty much impossible to do with a nice, clear digital screen. But I digress.

For the most recent assignment in my photography class, we had to get a disposable camera and use it along side our digital cameras, taking exactly the same photos with each. This was so we could compare and contrast the quality of the images.

I was a wreck with ever film photograph I took, unable to see if it came out well or if I'd gotten my finger in the lens and overall, I kind of hated that part of the project. When I got the prints developed, unsurprisingly enough, a lot of the photographs were horrible and not to my liking at all. The subject mater was good, but the disposable camera was unable to properly capture some of my photos because of lighting or other issues. There were five or six photos that I really loved and four that I actually consider better than their digital counterparts.

So this is me--not renouncing my love of digital photography--rather, I'm finally conceding that film is better equipped to take some sorts of photos (mostly outdoors). And now I'm sharing the four photos that came out better than their digital equals. Enjoy.

I agree with you on that grain in the clouds, it's just so aesthetically pleasing. It looks like an old photo to me, probably because of that nice grain and the fact that the tree that would normally be in focus in the front on the left there, is the one that's the most out of focus. I love that rustic charm about it.

Thanks a lot. I really do like the grain. And, as part of presenting the project, we had to show two photos of the same thing (one digital, one film) and I presented this one and the digital counterpart; this one was much better. I especially love that it came out kind of dark, because the digital came out really bright. Obviously, the light from the snow overwhelmed the sensor in the camera, which is not uncommon.

It could be the graininess of it, but it looks like something in my photography book...

Submit this one to the Aquila!
