October 31st - what a lovely night it had been.

Olive had been out all night trick-or-treating, by herself, sadly. Her roommate wasn't too fond of going out so late and, well... She was supposed to be ‘too old' for the tradition, anyway. Luckily, she'd made the full journey around the neighbourhood without being met with the dreaded ‘Aren't you too old for this?’ Good thing, too. If anyone had said that to her, she'd have probably sulked home in shame right then and there. And she'd worked so hard on her one-of-a-kind little witch costume...


The streets were mostly empty by now, and she'd taken a slight detour on the way back in order to hit up a few more houses, but she knew where she was going. It had been such a lovely night. The skies were painted a ghostly shade of violet and the clouds swirled around themselves in an enchanting dance. Her hooves gently tapped the pavement below her as she trotted between the pools of light provided by the street lamps, humming to herself absentmindedly while gazing upon her haul.


She passed beneath a dead lamp, not really minding the patch of darkness and barely noticing the-
    "RAUGGHHHHHHH!!!" A horrid beast leapt from the darkness, roaring at the poor girl with full intention to devour her on the spot!
    "EEP!" Olive jolted, her bag of candy launching into the air, candy coating her costume and the floor in a geyser of sweets. She stood, eyes tightly shut and trembling, waiting for the monster to make its move. When all she heard was childish cackling, she dared peek at her assailant.


Lysander stood there, pulling a wooden mask from his face, beaming like a fool at the poor girl.

Olive managed to steady her racing heart and had just about let herself breathe again when she realised something: her costume was coated in candy. The pavement was coated in candy. The bag was empty.


Lysander was still chuckling to himself over his amazing stunt that he almost missed the small sob from the other. Olive wasn't particularly skilled at asserting herself, or just being intimidating, but she tried. She really tried.
    In fact, she was trying so hard to tell him off for ruining:
a) Her costume, that she'd worked on for all of September and October,
b) All her candy, which she'd spent all night collecting,
c) Her general mood, because now she had been scared out of her wits. And not in a fun way, that neither of them minded when the street lamp flickered on for just a moment and then died again.


Neither of them thought much of the light giving its dying breath to warn them about the eyes that were spying on them, the nose that could smell them, the teeth that were anticipating their little bodies, just inside the tunnel Lysander had leapt out of.

Neither of them went home that night.

October 31st. The night when anyone could go out for a tasty treat.

WOW, THIS WAS A BEAST TO TAKE DOWN. This was definitely one of the more gruelling works I've tackled recently... Been a while since I've shaded something too.
That aside, this is my entry for the Dainty Halloween contest this year... I hope I do well... I don't have tons of experience with contests, so I'm a little nervous tbh... Either way, I had a lot of fun with this, even if it hurt at points, and I'm happy with the result!
I love the type of horror where everything seems fine at a glance, but you find one detail that suddenly throws it all off, and so I tried taking a more... Subtle approach to it.
