Before we get into Mint's backstory, lemme tell you the tale of how I got the idea for Mint 8D

Once upon a time, in the wonderful land of Discord, the Nebula began a... discussion regarding the characteristics of mint. The smell, the taste, the question of whether or not the flavor deserved to exist or not~

While not a passionate mint fan, I do enjoy the taste and smell enough that I felt that Remmis-AppleMaster and entropys 's brutal and unfair slander of the flavor was an injustice, so I took up my weapons to act as a Mint Defender.

The battle was loud, angry, and took up all of the spam channel. There were no prisoners in this all out war over mint. Friendships were shattered, nicknames were changed, and one prophet quietly swept her boyfriend's opposite alignment under the rug in order to avoid disowning him, as she knew she was obligated to do. The battle eventually ceased, due to prior obligations by both parties, but I was left a changed person. How could I, a humble fan of the whimsical flavor of mint, showcase my love and dedication, all the while indulging myself in my spiteful gadfly tendencies?
Then it hit me.

Mint... is a flowering plant.

With this revelation, I sought out images of the flower that would bring justice to the Nebula! Several roadblocks tried to inhibit this child's creation-- school bombarded me, Remmy threatened the sanctity of our friendship and my captain position of the S.S. Friendship, and my limited art abilities attacked my confidence if I could truly give the flowering plant the love it deserves.
But my determination won out. My lovely child, fueled by Undertale parody songs and heartbreaking headcanons, came to be.

So I am very, very proud, to introduce you all to my lovely child: Mint.

Mint is a common inkdrian that is genderfluid! While they typically identify as female most of the time, there are times that they are more insistent on male pronouns when being addressed. Nonetheless, they are fine with using they/them pronouns, and as such, I will probably almost always refer to Mint with those pronouns unless I'm directly writing for them in a specific time in their story :3c Their gender identity as a child was a common source of stress for them, but their good friend Grace worked very hard to make them very special flower clips that matched their gradient. Because of this, and because of plot things that I will discuss in Grace's bio whenever I draw them, Grace is one of their most precious friends. Their friendship is emphasized by the white of Mint's gradient, which was inspired by the snowy scenery the day the two befriended each other.

However, this friendship did not last as long as the two of them may have hoped. Mint had a tumultuous childhood that left them with a deep anger towards their circumstances and the world around them. The kingdom Mint lived in was very discriminatory towards inkdrians because they were so uncommon and not well understood. Eventually, Mint and other inkdrians, including Grace, were enslaved and forced to act as servants to the Kingdom of Orion. The brown in Mint's gradient came to exist after a day where they were beaten and shoved face-first into mud during their enslavement for their race and gender identities. Their suffering and the suffering of others filled Mint with a dark desire for justice at any cost, as well the desire to be strong enough to never let anyone hurt them or the people they care about ever again. When an opportunity arose, Mint stole a lance from the kingdom's armory and practiced whenever they could. They named the spear Harbinger, as a twisted promise to themselves that they would play a role in seeking out the kingdom's destruction.

As such, when the dark witch and cursed black cat, Calamity, demonstrated her potential to overthrow the twisted kingdom, Mint was willing to join forces and serve her, and their dedication to serve her could be seen in the green of their gradient--a green that matched the true Harbinger. However, Calamity, just as her chosen name implied, was ruthless in her conquest. Even inkdrians were slain in her rampage if she felt that they had showcased indifference to her personal suffering. Feeling that her ways were unjust, unfair, and cruel, Grace refused to serve Calamity with Mint. Mint took this refusal personally, and in their anger, turned their back on Grace and dedicated themselves to serving Calamity and seeking the revenge that their heart lusted for.

Years passed, yet Calamity's black anger against the kingdom that hurt her never seemed to desist. She left the kingdom in shambles, and any attempts to rebel against her were often snuffed out, either by her or her right-hand knight, Mint. However, as the blood on Mint's hands grew thicker, Mint's determination was consistently weakened. As their anger faded, their vision grew clearer, and it was obvious that their work was only hurting innocent people, which made them no better than the very people who hurt them. Guilt began to eat at Mint everyday, and they slowly turned from a vengeful knight to a numb, killing machine. It seemed as if there was no way out. No way out of the hell that they sold their soul to.

However, one day, rumors described a new rebel group rising that was spearheaded by two inkdrians--one of which whose description sounded suspiciously like Grace. The idea that Grace was alive, and fighting on an opposite of them, was utterly heartbreaking for Mint. As the years had ebbed on, their anger at Grace and the dismissal of her concerns and feelings had been a constant source of regret and pain. After much deliberation and soul searching, Mint made a decision. They would leave Calamity and find Grace. They would apologize to her, and whatever her judgement was for Mint, be it death or dismissal, then it would be just.

When Mint did find Grace, and laid their sins bare to her, the knight was shocked to find that Grace was willing to forgive them for their actions against her. They never... dreamed that they could be forgiven. That they could have a second chance with her. It was a dream come true.

Or at least, so it had seemed. Because, as time passed and reality settled in, perhaps... perhaps it was too good to be true.

While Grace demonstrated the beauty of her namesake, it was understandable that the rebel group was incredibly wary and unforgiving towards Mint. Though Mint was determined to atone for their sins, there was no level of mental preparation that could have ever prepared them for the constant mistrust, anger, and hatred that people felt for them. Without the protection of the fear Calamity's name wrought against others, Mint was susceptible to the true ferocity of those they had wronged. Their best efforts were constantly put down and belittled, and that black part of their heart that had fostered their anger against others before began to be stoked with flames of hatred again. They just... wanted to help. They wanted to make up for what they'd done. Didn't... didn't they see how hard they were trying? Mint began to constantly question their decision. They questioned if they would ever be forgiven. They questioned... if it was all worth it.

Then reality truly slammed home the day Mint saw Grace and the other leader of the rebel group kissing.

Mint fled from the scene, just barely able to put the conscious effort of not being seen. Finding a private area, they tried to gather themselves as the last foundation of their hope was suddenly crashing down on them. They covered their face in with trembling hands in a desperate attempt to hide their tears and block their cracked sobs. Without the beams of support that the hope Grace had given them, their heart was caving in on itself as they began accepting their new reality:

Just because they promised to be good didn't mean they would be forgiven. Just because they were forgiven didn't mean they could be with the girl they had loved since they were a child.

Just because they were trying their hardest didn't mean it would be enough.

Consequences... last forever.

There is much more to Mint's story. More for them to learn, more for them to struggle against, and more decisions for them to make. But I believe that this not so brief synopsis of their backstory will suffice for now. c:
