EDIT 10/17/2023: Got some religions wrong, both in terms of names and which would be the majority. The borders have significantly changed within the Federation as I've done more personal research and progressed the overall African Warlord Period timeline, which the Azanian Economic Compact was a central idea of in regards to this whole world's genesis.
In the lore of the AWP timeline, the Azanian Economic Compact was cemented in place by 5 united warlords in a series of peace treaties and alliances against foreign incursions. They started to place themselves in league with the European Union, and were integrated as a signatory into the International Criminal Court system as per the Rome Statute. The Nation of Allied Lords, or NAL, was later re-organized into a series of similar EU-like states, with recruitment from all kinds of anthropologists and humanitarian studies groups in order to create accurate borders and a sense of localized ideals and politics within their controlled lands. In 2083, the Statute of Kolowezi had each of the individual warlords abdicate from their dictatorship positions, and set in stone the allied economic system and independent countries which would become one of Africa's greatest economic powerhouses. the Azanian Economic Compact was born.
After the establishment of the Statute, the AEC had since opened up to other countries who wished to seek application to the compact's membership. Of which were Sao Tome-and-Principe, and the United Comorian States (formerly the nations of Comoros and Mayotte). Other formerly British or French Indian Ocean territories were later absorbed by Azanian-constituent powers such as the Zulu Kingdom, Tsongalia, and Makhuwa.
To explain the political macroregions further, the one marked "Angola" is noted for a significant Catholic influence, and the extent to which Portuguese is used in international trade. The same can be said for regions marked as Zuidafrika, which is a region that expands beyond the bounds of Azania. the Zuidafrika macroregion includes nations such as the Cape Republic, Pretoria, Nama-Naro, the United Kalahari States, and the Khoemanse Republic, alongside those shown on this map. The lines between the Angola and Zuidafrika regions begin to blur with Nama-Naro, and the nations shown in hashings on this map. Zuidafrika's demographics is noted for a heavy Protestant influence in certain regions, and the use of Afrikaans, English, or Zulu in international trade. Old Maravi and Old Gazankulu are regions named for pre-colonial empires and kingdoms, which even in modern times share cultural, religious, and linguistic links and similarities. Both regions also have a shared history being a part of the Portuguese and British Empire at different points. However, despite this, languages such as Swahili, Comorian, French, and Malagasy often tend to take more precedence in international trade in these regions, rather than Portuguese or English. This is due to the predominance of Indian Ocean trade, and the relevance of the nearby French overseas territories, as well as Comoros, Madagascar, and the East African Federation being very close by. the Lower Rift Valley is often noted for it's very tumultuous history, but most history it's relatively modern religious affiliations.
One of the warlords which would go on to found the AEC did initially try to fight the local Rift Valley Messiah, known as Mukombwe, from spreading his splinter-sect of Christianity. It's an Orthodox, Sikh, and Manichean influenced Christian sect, at least in regards to it's central philosophies it's relatively revolutionary ideals. Said warlord was relatively unsuccessful in his efforts, as the ideology would spread far beyond his domain. Mukombwean Christianity is, in modern day, seen as a relatively wholesome sect, if not a little bit creepy by some at times, with it's rather joyous and zealous ceremonies and followers, and it's adaptation or syncretism of some favorable African folk traditions. It is also heavily practiced in the western East African Federation, the eastern Congo, and parts of Oromia's Southern Peoples province.
I explored New Reformist Catholicism in another post (or at least I think I did?). Essentially, the old traditions and practices of the church, paired with continued outings of heinous corruption and attempts to cover up tabboos and other secrets, led to many scorned wishing to repair the system to openly rebel against the hierarchy of the church and demand change, while also not openly claiming to be Protestant. Nay-sayers would compare the New Reformist movement and some of it's differing practices from traditionalist Catholicism to sects such as Anglicanism or Hussite Christianity, which saw to preserve certain aspects of Catholic tradition while damning the Church establishment. Some among the Reformists have also been called Franciscans, due to many placing Pope Francis upon a pedestal as the most wholly good Pope, while any others who have taken his place could never compare to his pure greatness. Almost all African nations have pledged loyalty to the Reform movements would they have a Catholic majority.
