in this world, Columbus shipwrecked on the way to the new world, delaying the expansion to the New World by over 40 years. In that time, the Aztecs fell, Spain was occupied by a personal union of France and Aragon, and England and Denmark lost an antipapacy war against the HRE. In 40 years, the natives of the Americas made leaps and bounds not only in technology, but in medicine, agriculture, et cetera. Nations became more sedentary, and a writing system would even come to be developed by Tlaxcala, adapted by most of mesoamerica, and being a scribe became a commonplace profession.
the discovery of the New World was made by the Portuguese, who by 1530 had made tributaries or occupied states of a broader Iberia and Mauretania. the Portuguese would brush shoulders with a confederacy of Narragansett bands, which drew the attention of the Haudenosaunee League. the Syracuse-Lisbon Pact would be formed soon after, allowing trade between the two nations, and a formal military alliance against the Narragansett-- who were sold into slavery under the Pact.
while Smallpox became a major pandemic in the Americas, the people of the northeast, pastoral herders of Appalachian mouflon, had their own diseases. the Portuguese would bring back what came to be called the Onondaga Plague, which ravaged it's way even into the Holy Roman Empire. Though not as deadly as something like the Black Plague, this throat-rotting disease was still able to kill. Mutual sharing of diseases was the only thing hurting the pact. Portugal and Haudenosaunee together came up with the first blood transfusions seen in any of the two regions, with the help of some old Abbasid Dynasty texts. The Smallpox outbreak in the Americas, and the Onondaga Plague soon subsided. the Dutch later braved the waves in the 1560's and eventually came to colonize the greater Antilles and the Florida swamps, assimilating the tribal peoples under their rule-- resisters though were segregated to an island called "Tainolandt". Another group of miscellaneous Moor-ethnic Portuguese would come to colonize what we know as Puerto-Rico, though in this world is called Orobos. the French Empire, after the dissolution of their imperial possessions as well as the Crown of Aragon dissolving, France decided they should hop on the imperialism action, colonizing the lesser Antilles and what we know as the coast of Venezuela and the Guyanas. Sharing their technologies with the natives proved beneficial to both sides, as things like processed metal weapons and horses were traded in kind for unique foods, such as tomatillos, squash, peas, beans and maize, as well as the furs of buffalo. the Penobscot Bow, wielded by the Haudenosaunee, was used to great affect by archers in Europe. Later, Persian mercenaries and pirates serving nobles in the Caribbean would introduce the ivory compound bow to the American southwest. By the 1590's, the American Kingdoms could compete just as easily with the European powers. Franco-Chibcha-Incan trade networks would be established along the northern South-American coast.
Haudenosaunee methods of Democracy would later inspire the Iberian Union between Portugal, Galicia, Hispania, Grenada, and Catalonia, and their confederacy.
In terms of religion, some regions were more or less willing to give up the old gods in favor of the Christian God. However, some of the uto-aztecan and mayan nations had even converted to Islam, in the cases of Petén-Itza and Tutupecan-- their kings had converted in 1580-something or so. Islamic missions have since been spreading along central America. Most central-American nations, as aforementioned, developed a writing system. However that writing system had begun to take on reforms inspired by Arabic. This is contrary to the Atlantic-coastal regions within Dutch and Portuguese influence, who adapted the Roman alphabet. the Russians would colonize the Americas around the same time as the Dutch, colonizing what we know as Alaska and conquering the eastern Athapaskan and the Salishan nations. the unique cultures that would develop in the generation following would create a Salish-Slavic mixed culture (think like how Mexico is a Mexica-Spaniard culture), which would go on to revolt against the Russians, and form their own nation in the New World by 1590.
