Description
In a world where the Union was a bit more tough about reconstruction. save for Louisiana and Arkansas, almost all of the southern states had been reorganized in accordance to Union dictation in the Southern Reorganization Act of 1878.
The states of Elbertshire and Okefenokee are just within the Gullah-Geechee Corridor, and have a majority-black population. Douglass, Louisiana and Tunica also found that they had just-barely majority black presence within their states.
Oklahoma was reinstated into the Union without issue due to treaties with the local Muscogean tribes, who had initially sided with the confederates in a hope for better rights and freedoms.
Other native-majority states, such as Appacheria and Comancheria, were given full rights in the union to offset the presence of african-americans in the senate and congress going into the 1900s.
Elbertshire was named for Samuel Elbert, a commander on the side of the United States during the US Revolution.
Interior Carolina was initially going to be called Yazoo, but since that is a stupid name, they went with a better option.
South and North Florida were also going to be Seminole and Apalachee. This did not work out, for reasons unknown.
Since the northerners had taken most of Virginia ('north' Virginia, rather) in the Civil War, they got to keep the status whilst the southern half was named Roanoke, for a much earlier failed colony in US history.
Shawanoe, named for the Shawanoe ("Cumberland" at some point) River, was organized out of parts of Kentucky and Tennessee that did not touch the Appalachian Mountains.
Completely ridding themselves the name of an English king, remaining territory in Georgia was renamed to Piedmont, which is what the slopes along the atlantic side of the Appalachian Mountains were named.
