Description
So I've been gone for a long while. This is me and what I've been up to.My final project's requirements...in a nut shell...
-Wood transformation.
use the material in a way it normally isnt. but also in a way that no other material could easily substitute. To accomplish this, only stock 2x4s were used, they were curved in a way that you normally dont expect to see a 2x4, yet it had to be a 2x4 because the grain of the wood was what allowed the curve to exist.
-Secondary Material
A secondary material was allowed. In this case, it was string. In order to hold the wood's curve in tension WITHOUT ANY GLUE OR ADHESIVES, string was necessary, yet minimal.
-Human Enclosure/Pod
The project had to involve the human body. whether its walked through, sat on, or whatever. So this project has 2 chairs, a desk, shelf, roof covering and short "hallway."
-Portable
The project had to be able to be moved. No matter what. Hence the reasoning for not allowing any glue. If you cut all the string, the wood would be able to be unslotted, straightened and carried.
Final review was last friday, everything went great. I'm now a second year architecture major.
any questions?

yeah its the top ranked architecture degree in the midwest pretty much. It used to be like MIT but for Illinois, then it got a little shitty in the 80s and 90s and now its working its way back.

its a method we came up with and developed for about 3 weeks before actually designing and building the final over about a week and a half. Basically, by using a table saw with the blade set at at less than 16th of an inch lower than the 2x4 (so about 1-7/16" high) you can make a series of cuts across the width of the 2x4 at varying increments. This, combined with many hands and an intense soaking regiment, and a secret hidden string technique, allows the wood to be bent. It appears that the whole 2x4 is bending, when in reality it is simply a small bend every 2 inches or so by just the skin of the 2x4. Since the table saw takes away approximately an 1/8th of an inch of wood with its teeth, the 2x4 can then bend ever so slightly to close that gap. Its a bit difficult to explain. But if you have a table saw and a piece of wood, play around with it and you'll get the concept pretty quickly.
The more difficult part was designing it so that the wood's tendency to spring back to normal was controlled by other pieces of wood wanting to do the same. The structure would have sprung back to flat if the pieces were not connected all the way around.
Thats about the best I can explain on here, I'm not sure if there's a website that can show pictures since we developed it without doing outside research...
That help?

all u used was string to bend the wood? wow!
did any of the wood break? how long did it take for the wood to curve?
incredible work!

we used the kurf of the saw blade on a table saw to make cuts nearly through them every inch and a half or so. depending on how tightly we wanted each piece to curve. then using water, string, and lots of hands to get the curves to set.

Remember that one time, in your car, I put on the rag that you have on your icon on my face. Remember? We were in the parking lot and had just finished grocery shopping. I put it on my face along with some random glasses that you had in your glove box. Then after laughing at me for a minute or so you decided to tell me that you use that rag for checking your oil.
Thanks for that.

wow that's awesome. None of the architecture students got to build anything on a scale like that at my school (A&M), especially not first years. I'm in the Landscape Arch. program, and we work hand in hand with the arch people a lot, but our final project was a little model that we built as a homeless shelter. I'd love to do a project like that. Where are you going to school?
