Description
the clock ticking on the wallupsets the quiet with a reminder.
hamster on a wheel
needs to begin another day.
rush about; here and there
the hustle and bustle of mortality.
each second precious,
it ticks away so quickly
as though time itself speeds up
and becomes oblivion
flying headlong into eternity.
eternity, oh what a word!
the void ahead of all humans.
a vacuum, wishing to suck one
into its infinite abyss;
yet there are never enough days
upon the calendar.
days filled with duty -
work, sustenance, sleep.
far too little of the latter;
attempting to cram everything
humanly possible
into twenty-four hours,
seven days,
fifty-two weeks,
a hundred years.
escaping the inevitable.
the rat race.
ants marching all around.
problems solved,
leaving hundreds in its wake.
unable to even cure my own ailments.
(physician, heal thyself.)
the ebb and flow,
the wax and wane,
in a hurry just to die at last.
being buried within a coffin
placed beside deceased loved ones
mourned by the crowd of painted smiles.
he was a good man
wasn't he?
so admirable;
so virtuous.
as the crowd disperses
into their own hurried frenzy.
the clock which mocks the living
continues ticking
despite every effort
to slow its eerie cadence.
when at last, it stops.
and all is quiet,
all is black,
all is null and void.
never enough hours within the day.
fleeting mortality,
slipping through my fingers
like sand through
the hourglass.

This is why I'd trade almost anything for a shot at immortality. Not enough time to see, hear, and learn.

Reading this reminded me why in the last week I slept only half the hours I usually do. Sometimes I'll give anything for a 48 hour - day. But still, I don't think I'll trade that for immortality. The continuous rush is what keeps the blood pumping for me.

There is something to be said for the rush of urgency. That impetus which compels us away from sloth and decadence and into action. I believe I could stand to have a bit more of that myself.

Indeed. But soon enough, it will fade from your memory I think...

Not much that fades from this memory, sad to say. At times, those memories are a trifle bit visceral.

It's exactly how mortality feels... so busy, how do we fit everything we want into such a short space of time?

We don't. And therein lies the paradox, that in trying to do everything we enjoy nothing.

Quite so.
Now I, on the other hand, have been tempted to pester a friend for piano lessons. When one lives many lifetimes one can indulge many lifetimes' worth of pursuits. I suppose there is some benefit to this immortality thing.

Well, you have to find something to while away the years, don't you? Piano is a particularly good choice ^_^

I had hoped to while away the years watching my progeny, but piano will have to do, I suppose.

Classical guitar is beautiful.. but you don't get many classical guitarists these days - everyone's into rhythm or bass.

One of the others has recently started learning classical guitar. It is a bit peculiar; we have become a coven full of aspiring artists in some form or another. Mortal world, beware.

No risk of that happening. For one, if any of them behaved in such a manner, we would do them the favor of introducing them to sunlight.
Robin enjoys the thought of immortals finding something to make their immortality meaningful. Such seems to be the motivating factor behind his recent encouragement of the arts. But we know well enough to stay somewhat underground. If just for our own safety.

This line said it all for me: problems solved, leaving hundreds in its wake May I type it out and frame it. What a telling reminder to let some problems resolve themselves while we sit back and enjoy...anything. Everything.
This also made me realize that both sides of the coin have their tarnish. For an immortal, time stretches on infinitely, doesn't it? Nothing can be hurried.

You are welcome to do whatever you'd like with my words. I certainly hoped to convey something within the piece. I did not stop to enjoy living so much when I was alive.
Alas, how does fate make one immortal if their are content with status quo, yes?
Time does stretch into a chasm without end, it seems. And I have yet to experience even a century of it. Still, when one possesses the same face year after year, one knows all to well that time has no end. This is the benefit to being tethered to the realm of mortals, I suppose. You help nudge us out of our stupor on occasion.
