Description
Ink and red pen on A4The swan features frequently in Irish mythology. Many legends feature men and women transforming into swans during a critical point in the story. Popular myths that feature swan transformations include The Children of Lir, The Wooing of Etain, and the dream of Aengus. Because they mate for life, swans are often associated with love and fidelity. This pairing would have been noticed in ancient Ireland, and so the love of swans becomes an appropriate reflection for the eternal love and affection between mythic characters. Irish myth has a long list of animal transformations and transmogrifications. These rebirths and reincarnations work to reinforce the interconnectedness with man and nature that would have been celebrated in the pre-Christian cosmology.
