Description
A strike cruiser is the second most common type of capital starship deployed by the fleets of the Legiones Astartes, second only to battle barges.
While most Chapters or Grand Companies of the Legiones Astartes have access to only two or three mighty Battle Barges, these behemoths are rarely called upon. The Chapter’s Strike Cruisers are more common although rare compared to Imperial Armada ship classes. A single Strike Cruiser is usually enough to quell a rebellious planet. The same cannot be said of an Imperial Armada cruiser.
Strike Cruisers can carry up to one full company of Space Marines (about 80 to 200 Legionaries) and their equipment. They are primarily used for rapid deployment. They are often the first to arrive in the orbit of a threatened planet. They are capable of deploying their cargo within twenty minutes of arrival.
The armament of a Strike Cruiser is comparable to that of an Imperial Navy Dauntless Light Cruiser, equipped with two Weapons Batteries. However, the Strike Cruiser omits the lance weaponry for a mighty Bombardment Cannon.
A Strike Cruiser has a flight deck for launching seven Thunderhawk Gunships or four Stormbirds.
Just as with battle barges — but on a smaller scale — Strike Cruisers are modified designs used by the Legiones Astartes, optimized and reconfigured for planetary assault and boarding actions in primacy over other roles.
Towards the end of the Great Crusade, purpose-built Strike Cruisers were built under a program spearheaded by the 18th Legion, Dragon Warriors, with their Assault Cruiser Ebon Drake. The Primarch Vulkan had a hand in Ebon Drake’s creation and also gifted its plans to several of the other Primarchs and their Legions.
In the 11th Legion, Kashindan, each Grand Company has ten Strike Cruisers, with a total of 100 in a Chapter.
Named after the river Yodo on the island of Hondo on Nippon, the Strike Cruiser Yodo (淀) was one of the first purposely-built strike cruisers of the 11th Legion. She severed with the Combined Fleet for 400 years before being crippled and destroyed in 447.M31.
