Description
  Near the end of the Great Crusade, a novel technique was found for extending the range of plasma-based weaponry called super-fired plasma. These weapons were built into what became the Tyrant class cruiser. The Tyrant was thought capable of delivering both long-range and short-range fire of equal power. During trials, however, it was soon realized that its long-range fire was not much of a threat to anything larger than an escort.

  Not wanting to give up on the project, the Admiralty turned over the super-fired plasma cannons to the Tech-priests of the Forge World of Ryza. The Tech-priests of Ryza, renowned for their expertise in plasma engineering and production, devised a method to eliminate power drop-off at extended ranges. This gave the Tyrant class cruiser the power equivalent of a battlecruiser and transformed them into deadly opponents at long range. The Tyrant class was popular among the Imperial Armada because of its superior range well into the 39th millennium.

  The Tyrant Class Cruiser is also found in the fleets of the Legiones Astartes. Because of the mobile nature of the Legions, these cruisers are equipped with two interconnected Gellar Fields. If one fails, the other will keep the ship safe from the warp's tides of pure cannot-be. Many of these cruisers have been up-gunned and are heavily automated.

The Kita (北) of the 11th Legion is an example of a Tyrant Class Cruiser. Along with her sister ship, Aino (間ノ), the Combined Fleet uses both ships as a long-range fleet support unit for major engagements and planetary assaults. In 930.M31, Kita and Aino were outfitted with powerful Nova cannons as a part of a refit that also saw their superstructures redesigned.
