Description
In theater, a ghost light is a light that is left energized on the stage of a theater when the theater is unoccupied and would otherwise be completely dark. It typically consists of an exposed incandescent bulb (or a CFL or LED lamp) mounted in a wire cage on a portable light stand. It is usually placed near center stage, either downstage, midstage, or upstage. The practical use of a ghost light is mainly for safety. A ghost light enables one to navigate the theater to find the lighting control console and to avoid accidents such as falling into the orchestra pit, tripping on set pieces, or stepping on props. In this image, though, the 'ghost light' is a glass etching of the original Fire Island Lighthouse, as seen through a window of the new building (which was erected to house the light's original first order Fresnel lens) superimposed over the old lighthouse's brick foundation.
