Description
This statue is part of a series of sculptures in dark glass, representing Karen LaMonte's contemplation of the idea of night. You can still see the impression of a body, once there but now gone, in the empty dress. LaMonte was inspired by nocturnes for solo piano written by 19th-century composers, and by the nocturne paintings by James Abbott McNeill Whistler. She supplemented these influences with personal observations of the night sky and with studies of historical astronomy, particularly of Galileo.
