Description This image is from March 29th, 2009; and it's of a neighbor of mine, Bob, who's been a bayman all his life. During the three years I've lived here, I have seen him venture out, in his wooden dory, nearly every single day - oftentimes more than once a day - in pursuit of clams, crabs and fish. On this day - when an early spring fog descended from above, and clothed the local waters with a thick shroud of gray - I found out that he was returning from crabbing. I was surprised to learn this, as I thought that blue claw crabs were only around, or maybe only legally in season, in summer and fall. But it turns out that all crabs, including horseshoe crabs - even lobsters! - are 'in season' all year long. They may be burrowed deep in the muddy bay bottom during the winter, but they're available; especially to those well-seasoned old salts who've lived their whole lives here - and who know where, when and how to procure them.
