This carriage was built by Brewster and Company in New York, in 1897. Named for its slender, spindly appearance, the spider phaeton was a popular men's pleasure driving vehicle in the 1890's. This was a light and quick choice for showing off in driving competitions, which were sometimes held in Central Park - despite the park's rigorously enforced eight mile-per-hour speed limit. Brewster sold this particular vehicle for $850, and it was delivered to new owner Daniel S. Lamont's West 53rd Street residence on June 1, 1898.
