Description
My third attempt at a Colour pencil portrait of Marilyn Monroe - Faber Castell Polychromos & Derwent pencils (gel pen for some of the hair highlights). I'm not sure who took the original photo, which has to be one of my favorites - downloaded from theplace.ru. I like this image as it is far less contrived, and far from stereo-typical of mot of the images we are more familiar with.
Born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926, in Los Angeles, California , she was later baptized Norma Jeane Baker. After spending much of her childhood in foster homes, Monroe began a career as a model, which led to a film contract in 1946 with 20th Century Fox. Her performances in The Asphalt Jungle and All About Eve (both 1950), drew much attention. She had her first leading role in Don't bother to knock and 1953 brought a lead in Niagara and no doubt led to her stereo-typical rolls Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), How to Marry a Millionaire (1953) and The Seven Year Itch (1955). She received a Golden Globe Award for her performance in Some Like It Hot (1959). Monroe's last completed film was The Misfits (1961), co-starring Clark Gable , with a screenplay written by her then-husband, Arthur Miller .

Thanks Rob! I love the early pre-Hollywood images
The scarf came out better than anticipated. It was the smile (with teeth) which bought me!

Thanks Ummar do you think so? It is an older picture of her, unfortunately I couldn't find out the name of the photographer. I love the bright colours in the original image. I'm pleased you like it.
Thanks again !

Thanks Bev. I've tried hard to capture the retro feel of the image and used colours close to the original image. I'm pleased that flows through in the image. Thank you very much, much appreciated

what method do you use for shading in color pencil? I usually do ballpoint pen and cross hatching for that.

Hi Shawn, no real method really, I very the pressure and angle to try and replicate textures. I'd say my shading would be too hap-hazard to call cross hatching thanks for the comment

Wow... You picked a great photo Paul!
Loving the scarf... you can almost feel the silkiness of it...the light from behind, that lights up her hair... the skin tone choices and as usual, the great hair and remarkable likeness!

Thanks Cher
I love the earlier photos. There are two other drawings I started of her which would be the more traditional images, I may finish them some day!
The scarf, I was kind of lucky with as I didn't really spend too much time on it, I have to admit I struggled with the jumper, and I'm not too happy with the highlights in her hair.
Thanks for the lovely comments
