Description "Jet." The Fire Lord glared up at the Freedom Fighter with cold indifference - as if this meeting meant nothing more to him than its political weight. Standing next to the Fire Lord was the old man, his uncle, Aang, and Sokka, in this grand, dark hall lined with broad, crimson pillars.

Jet took a deep breath through his nose and formed one hand into a fist - felt his fingers working, jaw clenched - and brought it up to his chest, clasping the other hand around it. He bowed (bowed!) to the Fire Lord, another bitter pill that needed taking, because he was here on business greater than his grudges. He saw Longshot bow in turn - and then, the Fire Lord bowed back at them. Strict, formal, business as usual.

Zuko wasted no time to get to the point. "The Avatar tells me that you asked for the 'real reason' for this peace conference. I want to know what you were talking about."

Jet glanced at Aang - spotted a grimace before he hid it away. The Avatar undoubtedly had experience keeping his emotions in check during tense political encounters, but living with Longshot as long as he had granted the leader of the Freedom Fighters an acute eye. "He had to know - we're using his palace after all."

"Point taken." Jet sighed and crossed his arms over his chest, looking over to the Fire Lord. "Alright, Your Majesty, here's what I know: there's trouble going on in the south that just might start the war all over again. If that isn't more important than haggling over whose army needs to get rid of what, then this conference is just an opportunity for Fire Nation showboating."

Zuko's face twitched - and, there, that indifference was gone. Certainly still cold, but Jet had uprooted him, and it took all the Freedom Fighter's strength to keep from smirking. "You might be my guest, Jet, but that doesn't mean..."

"Fire Lord Zuko, you are correct." The old man - Iroh - took one small step forward, as if physically cutting Zuko off. "He is a guest. We have called him here to hear him out, and we should do so."

To Zuko's credit, the Fire Lord managed to regain his composure. "Fine. Have you said all you wanted to say?"

Jet smirked. If Zuko wanted the information, he would have to work for it. "Depends. You wanna hear it or not?"

Sokka rolled his eyes and said, "You're as full of yourself as ever, Jet."

Ah - Sokka. A man who had mastered the ability to see clearly from Point A to Point B - a man who recognized that the bigger picture was more important than his opinions. Despite how Jet had given Sokka the most grief when he and Aang and Katara had come to the forest, he had been the least biased when they'd met again in Ba Sing Se. He'd been the one to allow Pipsqueak and The Duke to join the Day of Black Sun invasion force when they had nowhere else to go, without so much as suspecting an ulterior motive (in the two Freedom Fighters' own words). Without a more immediate threat, though, it was apparent Sokka's opinion of Jet hadn't really changed at all since the forest, but that was fine. Jet would make him work just as hard and would enjoy every last minute -

"Jet..."

Longshot was very suddenly at Jet's shoulder - quiet, practically unheard, but Jet had learned to listen as well as observe, and managed to pick up on it. Jet fixed Longshot with a disgruntled look and murmured, "Ugh, fine, ruin all my fun why don't you?" Turning to the Fire Lord, and loud enough for everyone to hear, Jet said, "I've had my people investigating the matter ever since some of my Freedom Fighters stationed to the south disappeared."

"'Stationed?'" Zuko narrowed his eyes. "Last I checked, your 'Freedom Fighters' were just three strong."

"We've grown." Jet smirked again.

"Well, there were more than just him, Longshot and Smellerbee," Sokka yielded. "But not enough to - "

"The Freedom Fighters' intelligence network is incredible," Aang cut in, a grin lighting across his face. "I've seen the reports for myself. You'd be surprised where they pop up - they can get to a lot of places people like us can't."

"You mean people who can't get their hands dirty," Sokka said, sounding almost as though being 'respectable' was a burden.  Jet didn't know if he should be pleased or insulted. "Not anymore, anyway."

"Just how extensive is this network of yours?" Iroh asked.

"Do you remember a few years ago, the prison break over at Pan Xing Island?" Jet crossed his arms over his chest and crooked his head to the side.

"That was quite the scandal, if I recall." Iroh fixed Jet with a sly grin. "The third most secure prison in the Fire Nation, short of the Boiling Rock and the Capital Tower itself, suddenly thrown into chaos as inmates rioted, resulting in several escaped convicts."

"A few of our Freedom Fighters had been arrested and locked up there. But," Jet added, "we wouldn't have known, let alone been able to do anything, without our connections."

Iroh heaved a deep, throaty laugh, and Sokka delivered a low whistle. "Okay, I gotta admit, that's pretty thorough right there."

"And you have proof of this?" Zuko asked, turning to Aang - pointedly ignoring his uncle and Sokka.

"Every once in a while, Jet forwards reports to me on various happenings - again, things that I can't tend to, with the greater responsibilities I have as the Avatar." Aang shrugged, frowned - Jet could tell how much he regretted not being able to fight the small battles anymore, and sympathized. "But this is big. Big enough for all of us - " a glance at Zuko - "to have to pay attention to."

"And that's my cue to continue, if you don't mind." Jet crossed his arms over his chest. "The short of it is this: several small villages have been burnt to the ground. Completely leveled, with no signs of the attackers, no witnesses, no bodies. The pattern of attack is inconsistent, and villages in both the Earth Kingdom and the occupied territories have been attacked, leaving me to believe that..." he took a deep breath. It was hard enough admitting this to chosen company, but to these people, particularly the Fire Lord? "...the Fire Nation is not responsible for these actions."

Aang nodded, a grim frown on his face - just as the reports had said, every last one.

"How many villages were attacked?" Zuko asked.

"Over a dozen. Almost two."

The Fire Lord glanced away and to the side, eyes sliding half-shut. "I see. And you're sure my people are not responsible?"

"It depends on your definition of 'your people.'" Jet squared his shoulders. "The fact that each of these villages has been burnt down leads me to believe Firebenders are involved to some extent, but there's nothing keeping it from being insurgents or Ozai Loyalists. Last I checked, there were a lot of folks like that out there. Including," Jet narrowed his eyes - had to take another deep breath, because this was going to a Dark Place, "the Rough Rhinos."

"The Rough Rhinos haven't yet been captured, this is true." Iroh bowed his head, closing his eyes. "And they are one of many who have the destructive will to do such a thing. But not even Mongke and his men have the power to inflict so much damage, if what you're saying is true."

"The inconsistent pattern doesn't really mean much either," Sokka mused, brow furrowed. "Jet's right: it can't be just a coincidence, and no random group of thugs can cause that much harm. Our mystery assailant has a modus operandi."

- - -

Zuko nodded, setting his mouth into a straight line. It couldn't be more obvious, the Fire Lord's skepticism in the Freedom Fighters, and if Longshot knew Jet like he knew he knew him, his leader looked forward to proving him wrong - it was about the only way he could stick it to Zuko at this point, at least not without causing some sort of international accident. "Very well. Jet, you have two days to prepare a brief for the forum. I'm assigning Sokka to help you with - "

"No offense, Your Fieriness," Jet said, cracking his neck and furrowing his brow, "but I didn't travel hundreds of miles to be shoved into a back room with the hired help."

Longshot winced - now really wasn't the appropriate time to insult their fellow delegates, especially ones that were close friends to several of the most important political figures in the world today. "Longshot knows the details just as thoroughly as I do, and would be more appropriate for the job."

Sokka flashed Jet a dirty look; it was too easy to think Jet was just squirming his way out of his responsibilities, which in a way was true, but not the entire truth. Jet was much more charismatic than Longshot; if he crossed paths with any nobles, delegates, what-have-you, the leader of the Freedom Fighters was much more capable of handling those situations, and the further away from the spotlight Longshot stayed, the better.

(That thought reminded him of the confrontation Jet and Sneers had had shortly before the trip to the harbor, about how Sneers preferred being in the shadow. Longshot wasn't sure how he felt upon drawing that parallel.)

So, Jet bowed to the Fire Lord once more, turned, and departed from the hall, leaving Longshot side-by-side with four of the most important people in the world today. The only thing keeping him from getting the jitters was the fact that he'd met and fought beside all of them before, and that just because his part in the war was less pronounced than that of the Avatar, the Fire Lord, the Dragon of the West and, um, Sokka (did he even have a title?), didn't mean that he was any less important amongst them. He'd been there too.

Longshot turned his attention to Zuko as the Fire Lord sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. "I've been doing this all day, and it's still not over..."

In all fairness, Zuko sort of had it coming. Longshot crossed his arms over his chest, kept his mouth pressed flat - and then realized, no, none of these people would be able to understand him if he kept his mouth shut. He'd have to speak if he wanted to work with Sokka. Besides, he'd just admonished Jet about taking a jab at their peers.

"Sokka, do you mind showing him the way to my study?  You'll have some peace and quiet there to prepare whatever material the Freedom Fighters have collected for the conference." Zuko looked over at the Water Tribesman, who nodded in turn. He sauntered away and gestured for Longshot to follow - but not before the archer made a quick bow to Zuko, Aang and Iroh. As the pair departed, Sokka stuffed his hands and his pockets and said, "So, um. Been a while."

Longshot nodded. Yeah, it had been. Ten years.

"How's things? I haven't been in touch with the Freedom Fighters since the end of the war."

A sigh escaped Longshot's lips. It'd be like this the entire time, wouldn't it? He hated small talk. "Okay."

"Smellerbee?"

"We're married."

"Oh! Um. Congratulations?"

Sokka extended a hand, and with a light smile, Longshot took it. "Thanks."

- - -

Later

"Sorry for the interruption – so much for settling in!  Aang sent for us only hours after we arrived and we had to go in a covered palanquin to the main palace, where we were shown to the Fire Lord's audience hall.  There we met up with Aang, the Fire Lord, and his uncle, Iroh.  Sokka was there as well, and he didn't look too happy to see Jet – thank the spirits Katara did not show up!"

Yes, thank the Spirits indeed. Longshot slumped a little bit over his letter. Night had long since set in, the moon barely visible through the window, obscured by a veil of clouds. The situation had been tense enough, and the last thing he had needed to deal with was that bit of happiness.

"Jet told the Fire Lord and the rest a brief summary of all the information Sneers prepared for us.  It's a good thing we convinced Jet that we should send Aang progress reports; the Fire Lord wasn't ready to believe the Freedom Fighter's network was a widespread as Jet said, and neither was Sokka, but having Aang there to vouch for us convinced them both.  The Fire Lord has requested that Jet assist Sokka in preparing a brief for the full forum two days from now.  Jet turned him down, saying that I knew the information just a thoroughly as he did, thus I should be the one to work with Sokka. The Freedom Fighters will be represented at the conference from day one.

"I'm sure the others think he's being a glory-hog, but I know he knows what he's doing.  The Fire Lord doesn't like Jet and figured keeping him out of sight would keep him out of mind for a while.  Working with Sokka is much more to my liking than being window-dressing for a crop of diplomats – at least I'll actually be doing something useful while I'm here (and I won't have to deal with all the politicians)."

Sokka hadn't actually been as annoying as Longshot had figured; small talk for him came to a quick end, and once they'd reached the room Zuko had assigned them, it had been nothing but business for the following hours. How many, Longshot had actually lost count, but it was easier not to think of it. He was only awake by matter of virtue - if he didn't finish this letter now, he wouldn't get the chance until after the conference's conclusion. Didn't keep him from feeling like his eyeballs were ready to roll out of their sockets.

"Jet's doing what he came to do (other than help Aang): he's making sure that the Freedom Fighters are recognized in front of the whole world.  The only thing that's troubling me is that Jet will be without adult supervision while I'm helping Sokka.  Too bad you aren't here to cover for me! With the Avatar, the Fire Lord, Lord Iroh, and the Southern Water Tribe delegation behind us, this conference will certainly move along as far as our contribution is concerned. I only hope that the diplomats can actually come up with a solution that doesn't take ten years to work out, like the colony issue! Wish us luck – hopefully, we'll be coming home soon!"

Longshot paused, glanced up at the ceiling - remembered meeting Jet after the day's work with Sokka had come to a close. Remembered his leader's face - the smug, cool look of his, the one he got when he'd pulled some clever trick or another to make the dominoes fall in his favor. Remembered how Jet had said that he'd forgotten to ask something of the Fire Lord - and how, despite his desire to do otherwise, had approached Zuko again and asked of him a personal favor. Thinking back to that made Longshot grin, and he knew that finishing the letter now rather than later had one further perk: Bee would find out about his good fortune sooner, and that would undoubtedly help her through her time without him.

"P.S. – Jet's asked the Fire Lord if I can take the test for the Yu-Yan archers. He's agreed. It will take place the day after the conference."

Isn't it Chief Sokka? Or is he not the chief of the Water Tribe (yet)?

Finally got arount to reading this. T.T

I'm so happy you've brought the Rough Rhinos into the story, because I was always upset that Jet died, never getting revenge or something of the sort. In fact, the Rough Rhinos never appeared in the later part of the tv series at all! I approve!

Also, really excited for Longshot taking the Yu-Yan archers test. He's certainly talented enough to be one!

Good narration. But having seen the series, I just have to laugh. Neither Jet nor Longshot were even remotely as important as Aang, Zuko, Sokka and Iroh in stopping the War.

Aang defeated Ozai, depriving the Fire Nation of its leader and allowing Zuko the possibility of taking control.

Zuko taught Aang Firebending and willingly turned against his people, eventually taking control of the Fire Nation and getting it to stand down.

Sokka, while not the powerhouse the other three are, was a superb tactician and came up with plans which saved the situation at crucial moments.

Iroh, well, Dragon of the West and all, he was instrumental on BOTH sides of the conflict.

Now, I know this is FF-centered, but those FF people are full of themselves, especially for people who were ready to drown a whole village to prove a point.

The saddest point is that this story lionizes them, and forgets that these guys were as wrong as could be to begin with.

I agree with you, that FF aren't as big a part of the war as many of the other characters, but I think you have to remember that Zuko and other characters also weren't protagonists in season one. I'm a fan of characters who can make a change for the better, though. Episodes like The Western Air Temple and Lake Laogai showed us that. <3

Well, we haven't seen or heard anything of Katara yet. I mean, it seems like Sokka is the leader of the Southern Water Tribe, so is Katara the leader of the Northern or some sort of ambassador? Did she stay with Aang? I'm really itching to know.
Speaking of which, I must say that I like PFF!Aang far more than canon!Aang. He's grown up AND matured. Still...the idea of Aang and Katara together...is...well, unattractive. Not that I'm wanting a shipping war, I mean, hey, if there's one thing I've learned about your writing it's that you have the ability to turn the tables and mix things up. I am most intrigued by the idea of a Jetara relationship later on. It was my favorite (and unexplored) canon pairing in the show.
Anyway, I've ranted enough. So thanks for all the updates and please continue to keep up the good work!

Whether Jet has given up on Katara or not is something that we'll answer in the near future, but as she never forgave him even after "dying" for Appa and was quick to trivialize his sacrifice(as shown in Ember Island Players), there is without a doubt some tension left between the two that will be incredibly fun to exploit.

yah, seriously, i think that's the thing that angered me the most about that episode, even more than wasting time on filler in the LAST FIVE EPISODES OF THE SERIES. Gah! It made me lose all the respect katara had built up when she did a 180 on her Sugar Queen personality. ):

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TEi-Has-Pants In reply to sylvacoer [2009-11-28 06:57:30 +0000 UTC]

As much as I hated Ember Island Players, I understand its necessity - it was a recap episode summing up everything leading up to the finale. Yeah, it was a wasted episode (they needed to do SOMETHING with Toph, they all but neglected her after the fourth episode of book three or so), and yeah, it was terrible for both the characters' evolution and for the fans to watch, but it was still a necessity.

I still regard Katara as the most powerful character in the show from a development standpoint. Book one was absolutely phenomenal because of how Bryke made her grow, and her fight with Pakku is still one of my all-time favorite scenes in the series because of how resolute she was, and how she refused to kow-tow to the Northern Water Tribe's gender roles. That is a strength that transcends any Avatar State, IMO. But about part way through book 2, she just...stopped being so awesome. She plateaued out, and they did stupid stuff with her, like her attitude towards Jet and her bitchiness at Zuko. (Distrust is one thing, and she distrusted him for perfectly valid reasons, but she was an outright biiiiitch to him!) (Of course, Zuzu has it coming, but that doesn't negate my point.)

As much as I admire Katara, though, when I get into Freedom Fighter mode, I absolutely loathe her for her attitude towards Jet. >_> I'm such a hypocrite...

I spend so much time ragging on Ember Island Players because of Jet, but I never mention the other thing that bothered me about the episode: Sokka and Yue. It was something that hadn't been addressed since the Swamp, and I was interested in seeing if Sokka had manned up any since then, and they turned what could have been a really awesome scene bonding Sokka and Suki even more into a nervous chuckle. Oh well.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sylvacoer In reply to TEi-Has-Pants [2009-11-28 10:57:10 +0000 UTC]

oh hell, no - you don't put a recap episode within the closing stretch of a series, especially not one that trivializes all the sacrifices that led up to that point for the sake of a few chuckles! if people don't know what the is going on by that point, tough noogies.

in the last eps, toph was kinda just there, sort of like how an .88 artillery piece is just "there" - menacing as hell, awkward to be around, and noisy and scary as all get-out when it's unleashed. and then everyone flips when some jerk throws a grenade at it [grenade = air ship shutupthatanalogytotallyworks]. (and that's my awkward WWII-geek metaphor for today. )

hee hee, bitchy!katara was awesome - until the silly southern raiders ep. seriously, can we say "screw OPSEC, my personal issues are WAAAAAAAAY more important than saving the world"? aang was such a pussy in that episode, too. 3: sokka was awesome - i wanted to slap katara for saying he just didn't love mommy as much as she did because he wasn't haring off to jeopardize their entire mission for revenge.

katara's attitude toward jet was fully justified until he went and died trying to prove himself - hence "Finality."

the sokka-yue thing i could sort of see - didn't pay much attention to it for the same reason you did, but yeah... i guess the writers figured "sokka's too awesome for angst, but this is a bit awkward - I know, let's turn it into awkward comedy!" 8D *collectively beats the staff

TEi-Has-Pants In reply to sylvacoer [2009-11-29 07:14:08 +0000 UTC]

Okay, yeah, I have to give you that. Avatar's very plot-centric - the sort of thing you just can't jump in the middle of and not watch the entire thing later, you know? (that's a very round-about way of saying it, but it's late and I'm not thinking quite clearly.) While I give the staff some props for not running a clips recap, it still could have been dedicated to something more important.

Once, a while ago, you referred to Mai as a "prop" during season 3, and that's how I feel about Toph - though that analogy of a .88 cannon is fitting, because Mai would probably be, like, a silenced pistol. Equally as deadly, but not seen or heard very much.

I was more referring to Zuko when I said Katara's attitude was justified, but yeah, Jet fits that bill, too. And yeah, "Finality" is a good way to resolve that mess.

Sokka has had angst, and angst has worked well for him! Sure, he's a jokey, laughy character, but you can't deny that angst has worked out for him in the past (re: Sokka's Master, The Boiling Rock). I think one somber moment would have been okay with him in Ember Island Players, especially since he spent the entire episode being silly otherwise.

Lord, prop!Mai was one of the reasons I went from humorously crack!shipping her and Jet to making them into my next 4SRSBZNS fic project. is it too much to ask that a girl have some range of emotion outside of her relationship with her SO? I don't like her canon character, and I've come to realize some of it stems from the frustration of seeing so much wasted development potential.
