Fantastic image! The contrast between perfect stillness and motion is quite striking... Ring-billed Gulls are so neat.

a gull in action so difficult to capture! but why didn't you try to darken the background so that we see it better?

The original photo has trees and the a partial city scape in the background. I wanted to separate the Gull and bring it's flight to life as best as I could. And thank you for adding the image to your list of favorites . That means a great deal to me.

You're welcome, I love how the seagull looks frozen in time while everything around it is in super high speed motion... every time I ever tried to capture a seagull in flight, it always turns out blurry or there are other annoying things in the way like other birds or power lines or whatever, so I can really appreciate this one

I'll tell you a secret...something that I'd learned by accident during my last trip to New York. If you're in a place where there are lots of seagulls and/or pigeons, bring a friend who is not afraid of the birds, and a large bag of breadcrumbs. Have your friend start to throw the crumbs out onto the ground, little by little until the birds begin to gather. If you draw enough of them into your area they'll begin to hover over the person with the bag of crumbs. This should make photographing the birds a little it easier while they are in flight. Make sense???

I'd photographed this seagull, and several others, in Battery Park. There was a Polish woman there who was worried that the birds would go hungry during a recent cold snap. As she began to gently thow out the crumbs more and more gulls and pigeons and squirrels began to gather. It was amazing to watch...even more amazing to be standing among all those hovering birds.

oh by the way and that family of huge over-fed swans which had hard time walking were in Vancouver Stanley Park near the ocean... that small lake just near Stanley Park!!!

I know of the small lake you're referring to...it's a beautiful spot. Stanley Park was hit by very violent wind storm this winter and many, many trees were blown over. I haven't seen the park yet, but I understand that the landscape has changed a great deal.

And...I enjoyed your story about the swans. Thank you.

You remind me another Polish lady I saw throwing a bunch of cakes and other bread everyday at 6:00PM to huge swans even though it was clearly indicated that those birds should not be fed by humans, because then, they expect to be fed and do not fight any longer for their food by themselves... anyway, I had such a blast... the swans were so obese that they couldn't walk, i was sitting there nearby and a couple of Japanese tourists passed by and asked me to take a couple of pics with the swans as tall as them! but the male swan was too hungry or cranky, and he started to run after the Jap and she eventually got bitten... I had to run and peee because I had such a blast...
