Gabriella had been an aristocratic lady in one of the wealthiest ports in the empire. She loved the finer things in life, and her husband had denied her nothing. Her world was filled with fancy parties and the finest delicacies. When the market for olive oil fell however, her tastes began to pull her husband further and further into debt until he could barely pay the interest on his loans. Gabriella cared little for his excuses and demanded that he maintain their lavish lifestyle. He tried, but even a merchant as savvy as he could not keep up with the bills. They fell further and further behind in their debts. One day, the agents of the Gorgon Bank had come with soldiers. They took everything, including Gabriella's freedom.

She stood waiting for her turn on the auction block, now just as much a slave as any that were seized with her household. She looked to her former slave Kira for comfort, but found nothing but a cold stare as they stood shoulder to shoulder in chains. The woman who had defined so much of her life by her possessions was about to become one.

"Step forward, slave. It is your turn," said the auctioneer.
