A more detailed close-up of the GALAXY Class refit bridge module.(Ship refit concept schematics here phaeton99.deviantart.com/art/G… and here phaeton99.deviantart.com/art/G… )
The idea of an ejectable, fully autonomous bridge module is one I have been considering for some time, both in regard to the GALAXY refit and the ARCHER Class variants for the same period, and the technical demands of incorporating the requisite elements — a retracted or flush configuration for the nacelles when docked into the hull socket, in particular — had vexed me.. While browsing a series of fan-made DEFIANT-type plans, I had a brainstorm and tossed together this quick concept.
The plan is more-or-less to scale, although I made no attempt to accommodate an interior plan or precise dimensions.
The module is wider than the old, conventional GALAXY Class module, but only slightly longer. With the nacelle housings fixed outboard in this fashion, the interior volume should be preserved, with a minimum of moving components for launch. (The drop-down nacelles on the SOVEREIGN Captain's Yacht look cool, but really would be a point of wear and fatigue.)
The outline of Main Hull Docking Socket above represents the raised rim, not the socket itself which is wholly concealed by the Bridge Module.
This ejectable module would be fully warp-capable, and the warp core is a compact vertical type, roughly 6m tall, rising through both decks of the Bridge Module, and thus considerably larger than a shuttlecraft unit. Note that the "Warp 6 Cruise" does not reflect the top speed of the independent module, but rather noting that it can operate efficiently for extended periods at that warp factor.
I wonder what sort of registry markings the module would have: something similar to the suffix of a shuttlecraft; or simply a repetition of the mothership registry, since this is not intended to operate as an autonomous craft except in the direst of emergencies when the vessel is abandoned?
I am also debating if the bridge dome "skylight" window should be retained, since such seem to have fallen out of Starfleet fashion of late.
