Description
Hello.Quick picture made with the 5D MkI I got for few euros. This camera is just awesome and I will be fair : I don't regret this shitty 5D MkIII and all his troubles. The pleasure to achieve such a shot is like 10 times bigger than with a "the camera will do it for you" generation.
This falcon approach represent only 3 shots = 1 second. They are all in focus but I truly prefer this one.
Now... I hope that I will be lucky enough to make a shot close to this one in the wild...
Enjoy and thanks for watching
Nathan

My mom has this camera (original 5D), for those mentioning manual focus, this camera has auto focus. My bird shots are almost all manual focus because I don't have a auto focus lens longer than 55mm for my camera. If those 3 in focus shots in one second were manual focus, then I'm really impressed. Well, your gallery is plenty impressive anyway. Just curious, which lens was this shot with?

Very nice, and all the focus is in the right places, even if the girl is in half the shot. You look at the falcon regardless.

What mode did you shoot in? I'm having trouble getting sharp focus with this type of action shot with my EOS 50D. I've tried sports mode and single focus point on Tv mode but nothing seems to work. Not sure if it's the camera or me.

The way to find out is to see if you can do better in full manual. If you can, then the camera is the problem, either the auto focus isn't good enough or it's setting the shutter speed to slow. Maybe just not enough light, so perhaps a lens with a larger maximum aperture would help. I shoot full manual and manual focus most of the time and I think it turns out better than the auto modes about 80% of the time right now. It takes some work to get used to shooting manual, and I'm still improving, but I think it's worth the effort if you don't have a top of line camera that will almost always get things right on it's own.

... "shutter speed to slow" typo of mine, should be "too" of course. I took a look at your gallery today, lots of great stuff, including nice sharp birds in flight. If you don't feel they're quite as sharp as this, maybe it's a little bit of sharpening in post. Whatever you're doing now seems like it's working pretty well.

Thanks. I think I'm looking for a perfection that is difficult to achieve in any motion shot. Back in the days of 35mm it felt like images were razor sharp when you got it right, but I think I used to make more effort back then because I valued the image more. With digital I've become a little lazy and expect the camera to compensate for me. Instead of shooting 20 shots and picking the best one I need to start treating my photography with more respect. Using a manual setting instead of Tv or sport mode is a good start, perhaps even pretend I'm having to pay for film.
Thanks for the favs by the way.

I have very fond memories of my old Minolta 35mm SLR with manual focus. You do get such a sense of accomplishment when you nail the focus, especially on the action shots, tracking, anticipating the motion and fine-tuning....what a rush! This is an excellent shot!
