I've always thought those fighters were very small compared to modern ones.

In the original & second games they certainly were. However, in the third the re-designed fighter is much larger.
Javik talks about Prothean fighters in the Citadel DLC. He mentions that they were small enough that dead pilots would be buried in their fighters. I suspect it was a reference to how small this design is.
