Basically, this is what you get if Shepard loses a bet with Jack and agrees to wear whatever she says on the next surface mission.

It's a RPG, which like many others, has Orc, Elves, Dwarfes, Magic, etc etc. Expect that it's no longer the Medieval Age technologically, but instead the Industrial Revolution is in full swing.
