STORY
It was a beautiful, sunny day on Cynther Island, yet Flavia's message weighs heavy. Where would Zizrasil go if this threat would destroy his home? Would it even? As a pup he was always taught to not go into the water, yet now the ocean seemed even more daunting to the young vishul. Could he? Could he go into the water now currents weren't the only thing to worry about? His thick coat definitely hindered his swimming, and even then he had no experience with deep, open bodies of water like the ocean itself. He paced up and down the beach. Sometimes he bravely stepped toward the water line, only to turn with a yelp if a wave came crashing towards him. Could he? Flavia counted on all vishuls to help. She counted on him. But what if he couldn't get back out? He had to. Yes. Rasi took a deep breath, closed his eyes and charged foward.
The cold water and the pulling waves enveloped him. This is it. He thought to himself. This is the end of me. He felt himself sink downward, headfirst to the bottom. At first the panic prevented him from opening his eyes, but slowly he dared to peek between his lashes. The deeper he sank, the calmer the water seemed to become. The sensation was odd and unfamiliar. With his last bit of courage he opened his eyes completely and got his first good look at the underwater scenery. He gulped in surprise, making him swallow a big mouthful of cold, salty water. In panic he pushed himself back toward the surface, rushing to get closer to the shore again. It took a little swim, the current had pulled him further than he had noticed. He fell down into the warm sand, coughing violently. It had been beautiful down there. Peaceful. He could do this, he decided. He would go out and he would help Flavia get what she needed.
It had taken three attempts, but eventually Zizrasil figured out a way to brave the waves. Still a little clumsy he jumped out into the water, let the current carry him for a small distance and dove down. He kept his mouth tightly shut and looked around. Damn, what did Flavia need? It wasn't seaweed. At least he believed it wasn't. Coral! Yes! That had to be it. Two colorful fish caught his eye, and he happily followed them for a little distance. This swimming was more fun than he could have imagined. He paddled a little further until he remembered why he was actually there, under the surface of the great big ocean. The place with the currents, the place he had always been warned about. Rasi quickly kicked himself to the surface again to take a deep breath. He couldn't lose focus. Flavia and the other elders counted on him.
A few more breaths and he dove down, the fish darted away quickly, startling him. He didn't notice the dark shadow zooming by behind him. Rasi paddled on, looking for coral. He wondered, however. If there really were a monster in the ocean, how would a piece of coral tell Flavia more about it? He shook his head and paddled on. No matter, the elders were greater than he could even comprehend. He didn't need to worry about how this would be solved. He just had to get the coral to Flavia. Quickly he pushed himself up again, back to the surface.
Rasi dragged himself back onto the beach and crashed into the warm sand. He felt heavy and worn, and he was sure his soaked coat would stay wet for a great while longer. He was absolutely soaked to the bone. He rolled over onto his side and just laid there for a while, looking at the items he had fished up. His eyelids were heavy and not too long after he drifted into a restless nap. Anyone passing by could have seen the young, golden vishul curled around his pile of loot like an actual dragon. Inside Rasi's mind he protected great treasures from the monster of the deep. It wasn't really a detailed dream; if anyone were to ask he couldn't tell them what it looked like, except for the dark, looming shape he dreamed of with an undefined maw with surprisingly detailed teeth.
After a while the sun started to sink into the ocean again at the horizon, and Rasi's muscles ached from the time he spent in the cold water. He had jumped awake from his dream a while ago, and what had seemed like great treasure the moment he found it, now looked like a pile of scraps. He was not sure if he had found anything of use, and it saddened him a little. After a while of diving and turning over rocks he had found that he actually had no idea what this coral stuff was. Eventually he just started taking whatever seemed useful to him. Now he stood over his small pile of treasures from the deep. How was he going to get this to Flavia? He couldn't carry it all in his mouth. But he wasn't sure about just taking one thing either. What if he took the wrong thing and he left any possible useful items here, to be reclaimed by the ocean? He anxiously looked over his shoulder toward the water. The tide was setting in and the water crept higher and higher up the beach.
I'll have to pick a few he eventually thought. How much will I be able to carry? He picked up a few items, only to drop them again, and he pushed them around a bit. If only Flavia were here right now, or anyone for that matter, to help him. Maybe he should ask her what coral actually is and how to identify it later. That sounded like a good plan. He picked up a few of the items, as much as he could carry, and dragged his heavy body up the cliffs. Back to Flavia to show his loot.
