Description Meet Corinne the centauress. Ain't she cute?

I've been working on this picture for what seems like ages now, and today I finished off the last few details, mostly involving the shading on her lower half. I started this picture because I wanted to show a modern-day centaur girl in a dress, all cute and spunky, looking back over her shoulder at the camera, and I wanted it to be a good enough picture that it'd work well on my front page. So here she is.

I have no idea how much time was involved in this (40 hours? 50 hours?), but it's 100% vector-art-with-a-mouse from start to finish: No bitmaps were harmed in the drawing of this picture

This was loosely inspired by Akino Arai's song Follow Me, for those who are curious, and inspired more by the sound and feel of the song than by the words (though the title obviously was involved).

(This is the G-rated Disney-fied version; if you want the anatomically-correct version, there's one posted in my private gallery .)

You can see a closeup of this picture here , which shows all the detail in the print.

High-quality prints of this are available in the store!

I kept the anatomically-correct version on my private site just because some people might be a little squeamish about it. I think she still looks good Disney-fied, though

Personally, I prefer simple, normal clothing, like this dress, which you could probably find in a million houses across the country. But I'm glad you liked it even without the battle armor!

I do like a good ol brawler, but not all the time. But hey, I like normal clothing stuff just as much.

Very nice! Nice horse action, and very believable hookup between the horse and human bones.

I wanted this to be as believable as I could make it (within the bounds of anime, anyway); but it's high praise coming from you to hear that it looks and "feels" believable.

I line up the human pelvic girdle and the horse's shoulder bone - I find if you fit them together, it works, for angle and size, every time.

What do you do?

phantom-inker In reply to DonnaBarr [2008-10-25 12:34:49 +0000 UTC]

I generally imagine that there's a bone in the horse's neck that doesn't exist, a collarbone, and then combine the human pelvic bone and that "equine collarbone" together as a single bone. It's a little weird-sounding, but it produces shapes that generally seem about right.

DonnaBarr In reply to phantom-inker [2008-10-26 17:21:38 +0000 UTC]

No, it's lovely. But try it with the shoulder-bone; it really fits nicely, and you don't need the extra bone.

Just for the fun of it.

Do you love skeletons? I know I do. Bones.... Good.

phantom-inker In reply to DonnaBarr [2008-10-26 18:09:24 +0000 UTC]

I'm not a huge fan of skeletons, no; I prefer my people to have, y'know, muscle and vital organs and skin and such

I still think it works well if I imagine a sort of horseshoe-shaped bone at the waist. I know there's not supposed to be one there (well, nobody can be sure, of course), but the shoulder bones to me don't seem to provide enough shape by themselves for the body's lines to flow naturally, and a "collar bone" really seems to help. If you look at this picture , for example, you'll see what I mean: The shoulders are lower, and there's the distinct "V" shape of the not-a-collar-bone-not-a-pelvic-bone thing that I put there. It's subtle, but it's there.

DonnaBarr In reply to phantom-inker [2008-10-26 19:00:34 +0000 UTC]

Yes, but isn't it delicious hanging the muscles on them right?

Hm. I have to say I prefer the set-on-the-pelvic structure

but these are imaginary and we get to do what we want! Wheee!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

phantom-inker In reply to DonnaBarr [2008-10-27 00:05:10 +0000 UTC]

I dunno... I find I generally prefer the soft surface shapes, the muscle and sinew and fat and skin, and that the skeleton really only exists to hold them up, but that's me. *shrug*

I've done designs that are a little different; between this picture and this picture , which design do you prefer? In Ally's (the blonde's) case, her lower half is a little smaller, so it looks more like there's no collarbone/pelvic bone; in Melanie's (the brunette's) case, her lower half is a little larger, so her human half looks more like it's on top with a collarbone/pelvic bone under it.

> but these are imaginary and we get to do what we want!

Yeah, what's the deal with that? Imaginary sucks... let's get the genetic engineers and the doctors on the phone and demand that they make centaurs for real!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DonnaBarr In reply to phantom-inker [2008-10-27 00:16:07 +0000 UTC]

I like the first one. More bones. Something more -- flexible -- about the horse/human joining. We can't ignore bones -- they stick out all over the place!

Well, I don't need REAL centaurs -- I have just as much fun drawing them. After all, everything we know or feel is really in our own minds, anyway.

This IS The Matrix.

phantom-inker In reply to DonnaBarr [2008-10-28 21:25:30 +0000 UTC]

Interesting; I'll have to remember those preferences for the next drawing and see if I can match them.

And you don't want real centaurs? Well, suit yourself. The day they announce it's possible, my wife and I will be first in line

DonnaBarr In reply to phantom-inker [2008-10-28 23:03:11 +0000 UTC]

First in line to WHAT?

It's not that I would prevent them or anything, but since they're not here, I'm not going out of my way to get them.

phantom-inker In reply to DonnaBarr [2008-11-02 19:21:56 +0000 UTC]

Is it that hard to guess? My wife and I love centaurs, and if there was a safe way to become centaurs, we would. Simple enough

DonnaBarr In reply to phantom-inker [2008-11-12 16:52:54 +0000 UTC]

Each to his own. A body this small with this many limbs is trouble enough -- and it's already a mess (metabolic stress toxin overloads).

I don't want to add more!

phantom-inker In reply to DonnaBarr [2008-11-13 06:07:49 +0000 UTC]

Eh, we don't expect anybody to understand it. Heck, I don't really understand it myself, but it is what it is, and after a hell of a lot of years of trying to repress it, I finally just accept it. Having a wife who has the same bizarre fantasies herself really helps

No.... I don't want to.....

(Only if it's real. If it's imaginary, it's pretty).
