Description (Bloody hell, what category does this thing belong in?)

So ~BrookeTheVampire asks, "...a page dedicated to use of punctuation would help out. I still have trouble sometimes with colons and semicolons, and it's always nice for someone to be able to find that out all in one spot!"

Well, BrookeTheVampire, ask and ye shall receive! This is the Punctuation Gang's Most Wanted list, all your favorite evil punctuation on one handy reference poster!

The display version above is designed to be viewed on-screen; however, there is also a downloadable "full" version , designed to be appropriate for printing at poster-size.

If you're having trouble with punctuation, this is (hopefully) a handy answer to your questions.

I will definitely show this to the people of FanFiction.net. Some of the people I help there never seem to understand when or how to use correct punctuation.

Helpful and humorous. My favorite part is when you point out that s doesn't follow an apostrophe if the noun ends with s.

Haha, so awesome!

Too bad ellipses isn't a criminal. Also, you could've said when Parentheses (although many people call it brackets) teams up with exclamation marks to make a sentence opposite of what it says.

This punctuation guide is such a failure(!)

It's too bad that they often get misused.

Very clever and entertaining I always have problems with punctuation, they never seemed to teach you everything at school and then when you get to my year, they expect you to know it all :/ No body bothers to explain and you feel stupid asking. >_< Thank you so much for this, I shall be printing it off for my Language folder ^^

Hello. :] I have a question about punctuation that's been bugging me for a while.
If you're typing something such as:

The creature is most often called "x"

Do you write the period before or after the double quotes? ("x." or "x".)

I've always wanted to write the period after the quotes, simply because it looks better and makes more sense. But I've seen it both ways in my science text book, so I'm now completely confused. I figured that this would be the best place to ask. :]

Zack-The-Dragon In reply to nitoa [2010-02-25 23:07:02 +0000 UTC]

You put the period after the quotes, in this case.

If it was "x.", then people would refer to it as an x with a period.

However if it was just "x", then people would refer to it as a regular x without a period.
When you finish a sentence with quotes at the end, the period always goes after the quotes.

This is a cute and helpful guide and I think everyone should have one.
Especially English teachers.

Just one thing. In a sentence involving commas, "and" is almost never preceded by one.

It's a common mistake.

Like "Red, yellow, and blue" should actually be written "Red, yellow and blue"...for example, anyway...

I'm rambling. Sorry. Keep up the excellent work. :3

x-Silverwing-x In reply to sabisaotome [2010-02-25 22:23:42 +0000 UTC]

That's actually not always true. For adjectives and adverbs, yes, but if you need to break up a sentence, an "and" may be used.

For example: The other day I went to the store, and stopped by the park on the way home.

They're two different thoughts. "And" can be used after a comma if it represents "then", "afterwards", etc.

sabisaotome In reply to x-Silverwing-x [2010-02-25 22:40:57 +0000 UTC]

I said "almost", didn't I? XD
That's an important clarification I couldn't quite put into words at the time, so I'm glad you did.

It's interesting that your example doesn't actually necessitate a comma before "and". It looks better with it, but it's one of those two-way streets of grammar. *shrug*

x-Silverwing-x In reply to sabisaotome [2010-02-25 23:10:52 +0000 UTC]

Haha, fair enough.

To me it really depends on the sentence you're trying to portray. Yes, "The other day I went to the store and stopped by the park on the way home" is grammatically correct; however, when the sentence is read aloud, it puts the emphasis on the latter part. It makes it sounds more like the "went to the store part" is just detail, but the important part of the sentence is stopping by the park.

If you write it as "The other day I went to the store, and stopped by the park on the way home", it's more of a list. You are stating two seperate, though related, facts.

In my mind, always read a sentence aloud. If it sounds awkward, it's probably not grammatically correct. But if you actually do pause where the commas are written, then it is fine.
