Description (Bloody hell, what category does this thing belong in?)

So ~BrookeTheVampire asks, "...a page dedicated to use of punctuation would help out. I still have trouble sometimes with colons and semicolons, and it's always nice for someone to be able to find that out all in one spot!"

Well, BrookeTheVampire, ask and ye shall receive! This is the Punctuation Gang's Most Wanted list, all your favorite evil punctuation on one handy reference poster!

The display version above is designed to be viewed on-screen; however, there is also a downloadable "full" version , designed to be appropriate for printing at poster-size.

If you're having trouble with punctuation, this is (hopefully) a handy answer to your questions.

I burst out laughing when I came to hyphen. Abomination!

I also didn't know the name of Ampersand or Virgule. I'm definitely showing this to my English teacher!

Excellent! That apostrophe has been gaining power lately though and of the wrong sort. He's been sprinkling himself around in all the wrong word's. (Yes, that was a joke.)

It's a pretty clever piece. There are a number of typographic mistakes, however, which detract from the overall impact. I suggest you pick up Bringhurst's Elements of Typographic Style; you would probably enjoy it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

phantom-inker In reply to mocha-san [2010-02-26 04:57:53 +0000 UTC]

I don't claim to be an expert typographer by any stretch of the imagination, and I don't doubt a skilled typographer would present this somewhat differently. My concern here was primarily to provide the information in a simple and straightforward manner that could be readily understood by the layman, and it appears from the comments and favorites this has received in the last twelve hours that this is indeed teaching people things they didn't previously know. Grammar is an unfortunately dull subject for many people, and anything beats the paltry nothing most people are taught in school.

That said, the book you named sounds interesting, and I'll have to add it to my wishlist. It's not my most usual fare, but I think it would sit well on my shelf beside the Elements of Style and the Oxford Dictionary of American Usage and Style, don't you think?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

mocha-san In reply to phantom-inker [2010-02-26 11:48:06 +0000 UTC]

Certainly! The title of Bringhursts' book is in direct reference to Elements of Style.

The book delves into every aspect of typography that one could possibly hope for, and it is written in a manner which helps the facts rather than hinders.

β€œand when seen together, he always goes before quote mark”—I beg to differ

That's US style, right?

But very nicely done. I think you missed a few, though.

N-dash is nowhere to be seen which is used for ranges or sometimes for related things (as in β€œBoxβ€”Muller transform”).

Ellipsis is not mentioned anywhere, even though that's one of the more eerie abilities of Period to leave sentences hanging in mid-nowhere. Ellipsis has been known to alter some politician's speeches to the point where no sensible, coherent sentence escaped their mouth.

Interrobang is the temporary and dangerous alliance of exclamation mark and quotation mark, posing as a more ruthless variant of question mark alone.

This is great, it's so useful and I truly enjoyed your approach to the subject. Usually I find grammar texts boring and it’s a chore to get to the end of each topic, but this was real fun all the way! Surely I would have paid more attention in classes when I was a kid if the teacher had pulled out a similar poster
