Minorly edited, of course, but you get the idea.

I apologize in advance for the flame war this may or may not generate.

Whoops, nevermind. Just read the description. It's amazing what those things can hold!
I find that this entire situation (as are with most things involving creativity / originality / copyright) seems a bit out of proportion. I can understand someone pointing out that the cyberchu concept isn't original, but the continuous stream of insults from BOTH sides seems a bit ridiculous and overblown.
Although me joining in on this little flame war doesn't really prove myself any better than them, so...yea.

Really, if everyone were to just calmly attempt to solve this little situation instead of throw insults here and there, then everything will just disappear.

AND THEN HILARITY ENSUED.
I used to like these little Cyberchu things a while ago, but started to not pay attention to them. I feel pretty bad for that Wi-fi Cyberchu I saw on the front page of the group, it's just not fair that these guys are reporting fan art of fan art. :C

Ah, people get mad at the strangest things. A completely original character is one thing to get steamed over, but when it's just a fancharacter of an existing concept, the whole idea becomes ridiculous. They can be as protective as they want, but as a derivative fan work, they have few real rights. (If anything, Nintendo has the right to take down every existing Pokemon fancharacter, but you don't see that happening.) And I suppose I wouldn't care about their protectiveness so much if it weren't for what happens to those who make Cyberchus without permission. They aren't doing any harm or claiming the concept as their own idea, and yet they are instantly faced with aggression and hostility. There are nicer ways to settle disputes. Why can no one be nice on the internet? D: (On a side note, stealing, tracing, or recoloring the actual art files and claiming them as one's own work is not okay, but I digress.)
There will no doubt be a ton of flaming on this piece, but at least you stood up for your views on the issue.
And aside from my rant, I really do like this piece. The swooshy hairdo is my favorite part of the character. It looks so soft. OwO

I can understand where you're coming from, but I'm disappointed in how you're handling this.
...actually, I'm disappointed in how all of you are handling this. I mean, I get both sides of the story; they made the Cyberchu's as a fun little thing that they and their friends could take part of, so I can understand if they feel annoyed when some random person wants to join in on a "friends only"-type group. And I can understand you telling them off for believing that they own the Cyberchus(even though Cyberchu is just a redesigned Pikachu and therefore isn't 100% owned by them) and getting onto other people about making look-a-likes.
I'm not taking any sides here, as I look up to both you and *Staarii (seriously, I freakin love both of your guys' work, and it saddens me to see my favorite artists fighting), but I'm sure that there could've been a better way to deal with this?

Well, it didnt need to end up that way, buuuut its not my fault she thought I was "attacking" someone by telling them the truth.
So sorry to disappoint you. Not to sound rude or anything, which I know I will anyways by saying this, but I dont really care. I dont have to live up to anybody's expectations of how a "proper" way to handle someone calling me an idiot and an ass simply because I pointed out FACTS.
If they want to claim copyright to something strictly for a small group of people, more power to them, but they need to be more creative. You can't tell anybody what they can't draw, and that's that.

I was expecting there to be toast in the visor xD
Of course, if they're going to use a well known, very popular character for this sort of thing, then they better expect this sort of thing to happen often. It's not okay to be that protective over something like that.
I mean, if they really wanted it to be special, they could convert it to something original. I know, I've tried(successfully).

Oh, deviantART.
One half is full of copy-yeah-rights making minor changes to a trademarked design, the other full of trolls who see themselves as knights in shining armor to fight them off.
Legitimate artists looking to improve their skills are lost somewhere in the translation.

Wow, they were just rude >:U Seriously, you can't claim to own an idea that derived from something else. Even the NAME gives it away. Like, yeah, if everyone was copying something special to them, you'd have a right to get angry, but if you made a fan group, advertised it, gave them away and got angry because someone made one? That's just absolutely ridiculous. And it appears the way they are going around dealing with it is...immature, to say the least.

Niiiiiice. XD
I agree with this whole situation completely. Like, why should someone be harassed for their own creativity to make their own? It's just silly. I actually had to convince a friend of mine to stop drawing a Riolu like this because someone else had apperently copyright'd the idea, where Pikachu's had visors on their faces and such. I wasnt sure if they'd bash other people for using that idea on other Pokemon, but ehh. Diddnt want to risk it.
Afterwards though she thought it wasnt very original of her to use that idea anyway. Lol

PhantomCat In reply to Chocolatewoosh [2011-12-09 11:56:17 +0000 UTC]
Pfft, you can't copyright visor glasses.
Thats like someone saying "I INVENTED SPARKLEDOGS SO I'M THE ONLY ONE ALLOWED TO MAKE SPARKLE DOGS."
And then proceeding to troll everyone who has a rainbow elephant character.
Does not compute.
Anyways, you can't copyright something that already belongs to someone else, and you can't copyright ideas. You can copyright CHARACTERS and CHARACTER DESIGNS, but not if it's obviously supposed to be based on characters that already exist.
But jhsfbws why am I rambling about this

they did the same with glowing chus. Besides if you don't want it taken then you shouldn't put it on the net. If kids like the look and Idea, they are going to make something similar, no matter if you like it or not.
though you shouldn't care in the first place since they don't own pokemon its already a trademark, no matter how you dress it up.

Haha, I know the feeling all too well!
I agree. I know that makes me incredibly hypocritical, cause of my opinions about my own creatures, but honestly, I wouldnt harass someone if they did make their own thing out of my characters. So long as I am credited SOMEWHERE I don't think I'd say anything negative about it, but I digress.
I know I shouldnt care, but they can't just bend copyright laws to their wills, and they certainly can't tell people what they are and are not allowed to draw. And the part that bothers me about it most is that they actually HARASS people into taking down their fan characters, and that is not cool.

Yeah, I'm about to step on toes on both sides of this little snit now. Yay, me.
I agree that it's pretty asinine to slap circuit boards and a visor on Pikachu, claim it's your "original creation," and threaten to take action against anyone who dares to make an unauthorized fan character of your fan species.
But it's not much better to expend time and energy on parody drawings of said absurdity, and then post them where they'll do nothing but create more drama.
This whole thing is so immature it's painful, and I hate to see people I have a level of respect for mucking around in it.

IT JUST TURNED INTO THAT because some people think they can bend the rules to their wills, when in reality, then can not.
Its just unrealistic.
