Commission drawn by LadyVioliThere are many different hives throughout known space. If there is a constant, it is the relentless need for new raw material.
This takes the form of living creatures. Men and women serve as the primary conduit for growth. There is no evidence of traditional reproduction within any Exhuman swarm - though the secrecy and danger involved in observing such rituals makes saying it one way or another difficult.
Life-cycles are therefore unique, and they change from hive to hive.
The one consistency is that humans are treated like pollen; a material to be handled carefully, undamaged, and given the utmost respect. And also , material to be processed. Forced feeding of valuable Honey and visual indoctrination makes many vulnerable and eager upon their transition into drones-to-be.

Although they copulate, they are sterile. 😕 As such, pregnancies cannot occur naturally within the Hive.

The key would be using low level arousal stimulation on new recruits keeps them from thinking too much about escaping. By partnering it with pleasure when Hive member are around the new members want to remain, they want to stay, and they steadily become members eagerly.
Depending on the gender/crime, prisoners can also be accepted as trade goods by the Hives. Those prisoners are usually used as raw materials rather than recruits, and are traded for food supplies from the Hives. It is a coincidence that the food supplies contain quantities of aphrodisiacs, so the target population is too horny (and busy) to think straight the next time a Hive representative arrives to discuss business.

Why, thank you so very much for your commentary. I always appreciate your world-building ideas; they keep the core tone intact while expanding a bit on the theme.
I was trying to find a way to add the buzzing sounds of bees, but I think that's the perfect way to go about it. A low-level hum and buzzing sound that indicates and causes pleasure, and keeps them from trying to leave.
And as for 'trade goods,' that brilliant. I could absolutely see some hives simply taking on men and women as 'feeders' - kept as living pleasure units. And your idea of the Hives giving 'plague blankets' of highly nutritious food? That's way too good not to use.

I could even see the Hive using specific trade goods to encourage a form of violence in the target society. Get the men to fight and attack each other, they get arrested, then traded to the Hive as raw materials, and the gender slowly changes to mostly female. From there, the aphrodisiacs and health improvement drugs in the trade goods steadily build up, converting their bodies to be much more responsive and energetic, while the aphrodisiacs focus their energy on a specific goal. The goal is to weed out the aggressive members of the target society, so they are less likely to resist when the Hive arrives with their amalgamation forces.
The aggressive members have already been 'converted', the remaining men are too busy getting serviced, and the remaining women are stuck between their libido and their freedom.
The pattern is noticeable to outside observers, and there are several Assimilation groupies who go to a planet that is being converted, enjoy the parties, but skip out before the Hive arrives. Turnover in the membership is fairly steady, as some just want to have a few more days on-planet before leaving.
