I'm still drawing! Now, FIRE THE HEADCANNONS!
  The whole nightmare moon thing is going to be very important in my headcannon. The thing that actually started my headcannon is that I read a lot of stories with a dark force possessing Luna, and I was really surprised to find out that wasn't the case in the show. The reason why I thought that something else was to blame is that Nightmare Moon acts NOTHING like Luna. Somehow everything was different. The other thing that drove me nuts was the lack of strong emotions between the two sisters. I know it's a kids show, but I would have had Celestia actually sobbing and yelling. I also always hated how Luna was shown as being the only one to laps into darkness, and Celestia being perfect and distant. I probably should explain using my headcannon.
  In my headcannon, there used to be lots of Alicorns (everyone thought Alicorns were born, not ascended), but one day the world was shaken to its roots. Magical explosions filled the sky, earthquakes toppled cities, and Alicorns were seen racing across the sky. At twilight, the shaking subsided, and some brave ponies crept out to look. Huge craters were everywhere, and so were the bodies of dead Alicorns. Whatever happened has been a mystery, and it was thought that no Alicorns survived. But the royal family of the Crystal Empire lived (more about the Crystal Empire later) and Celestia and Luna were left. Tia and Lulu had no idea what had happened to their parents. Tia raised Luna as best as she could and the two lived on the road, raising the sun and moon and taking on various monsters that were harassing towns. When Tia was about 14 and Luna was about 10 they found the Elements (more about that later). The two started getting into larger conflicts, such as wars. When Celly and Luna heard their parent's kingdom (their parents ruled Equestria) was taken over by a chaotic monster, they decided to liberate it. After a long battle, the two sisters won, and were proclaimed rulers of Equestria. Celestia decided to establish a Dualarchy because she could not bear the thought of ruling without her dear sister Luna. Celestia and Luna defended the new nation well, defeating many new threats (like Sombra).
     But the powerful sisters had a problem in disguise. Because of their almost Messianic Powers and status, cults were started to worship the sisters. Luna discouraged her cults, but Celestia was flattered by their devotion. The Cult of the Sun, as it was called, thought that eternal day would be paradise. They viewed Luna as a threat, as a darkness bringer, and they thought that if they killed Luna the moon would no longer exist and they would have "Eternal Light." Luna bore their harassment with patience because she had no idea of the cults intentions. Years passed into decades, and Luna was hated everywhere she turned (Celestia had no idea how bad it was). Then, one day as Luna was raising the moon a mob attacked her. Decades of being isolated and hated had taken their toll, and Luna was taken over by darkness. Nightmare Moon killed the mob and then challenged Celestia. Celestia didn't even recognize the dark mare, until it proclaimed itself as Luna. Tia was in shock, and Nightmare Moon stabbed the white alicorn with her horn. Celestia managed to activate the Elements and banish her sister, but she was in so much shock and pain that she nearly attacked her own cult. Celestia had banished her only friend, and she blamed herself for everything. The strong emotions nearly destroyed the alicorn, and as the years went by, rage and confusion faded into numbness, and a once laughing and cheerful ruled faded into a stony pessimist. Nothing cheered her up until a certain purple unicorn, who was like the little sister she once had, became her student.
As a result, both sisters are very damaged, but Celestia more so. Luna has to adapt to people that have changed over her thousand year absence, and Celestia has been horribly alone. Luna actually is adjusting very well , and Celestia has her sister and the main six. But if the two sisters are still a long way from stable, and are a step away from madness.
Solar Flair (Celestia's nightmare form) IS going to show up, and is going to be a major plot point. I will try and explain this better later.
