It's probably hard in comparison to the relative difficulty of level grinding in the Johto region. You don't find many high-level wild Pokemon. I like using Golem, and Geodude is a must if you start with Chikorita as Rock is super-effective to four of Grass's five weaknesses (and resists Poison, but Geodude's Ground moves take care of that).

I do like it, but it has a bit of trouble through the game, especially early on. Its only real advantage against a gym on Johto is, ironically, against the Ice-type gym due to their second types being weak to Grass, and Ice not resisting Grass attacks.

the problem is chikorita, is one of the most week grass pokemon ever. :3

Chikorita was, like Serperior, styled for defence. Venusaur has it easy in Kanto, really.

There are official tournaments for Pokemon battles, with tier lists and everything. Sort of an organised way of taking the fun out of the game.
