he shepherds a flock of giant tortoises (valued for their eggs, which are large enough to be eaten as a whole meal; a grand commodity in a future of scarce food sources) in the higher altitudes of the Badlands in what used to be South Dakota. earth's land area has dwindled to several isolated island-continents, forcing the remaining human populations to live in more tribe-oriented social structures, groups being specific to their islands of residence. hence, the tortoise herding.
