The thud of heavy rubber soles on metal stairs echoed through the dimly lit space. Each heavy *clank* rebounded off the sharp corners of metal computer casings and slid smoothly across expansive curves of thick layered glass, muffled by the eternal hum of supercomputer cooling systems and exhaust vents. A shadowed figure as it descended into the lower laboratory, features revealed as the warm back lighting from the upper levels gradually gave way to the cool, steady glow of the room’s three massive tanks.
Rheinbeck smirked as he approached and straightened his lab coat around his leather jacket with thickly gloved hands, causing the large red metallic “R” embroidered above his chest pocket to flash as it caught the light. He made a show of walking slowly around each tank and peering at the figures within before stopping in front of the middle tube. A smirk flitted across his face as he leaned forward, rapped his knuckles sharply against the glass, and activated the holographic interface.
“So how are we doing today, my lovely lab Rattattas?” The question was rhetorical, of course; while the figures could technically speak behind their oxygen masks, it was so muffled by the plastic and the thick, nutrient-rich liquid within the tanks that he would never be able to make out what they were saying. *If* they were saying anything intelligible at this point that was, he thought, raising an eyebrow approvingly as he skimmed the night’s progress report and noted the data points on dental development.
The subjects’ transformations were coming along smoothly and with increasing quickness, every day revealing changes more substantial than the last. Already an improvement from the prior batch of serum, he thought, which had only managed to bring the subjects approximately 50% of the way to the desired product before neglecting to induce further changes.
Still, failures and all, it was a job that Rheinbeck enjoyed immensely. As a research scientist for more… savory… corporations, his colleagues had rejected his papers and ridiculed his groundbreaking idea of transforming all humans into Pokémon. It had been impossible to find grant funding, and even more impossible to find anyone willing to participate in his experiments. Now, however, he had all the funding he could ever need, a lineup of eager assistants, and an endless supply of “volunteers.” He got what he wanted, and Team Rocket got more Pokémon for whatever nefarious purpose they dreamt up next. The chance to fulfil his dream was worth signing every questionable piece of fine print in his rather extensive contract.
A muffled exclamation from the third tube snapped Rheinbeck out of his thoughts, and he looked over in time to see Subject C (unfortunately inverted in position due to some spirited struggling during insertion and hookup) banging a clawed, padded hand on the glass. Subjects A and B soon followed suit and were promptly ignored as Rheinbeck whistled a cheerful tune and twisted a holographic dial to trigger another serum injection. A higher dose, this time; they’d already proven they could take it. The interface chimed a cheerful affirmative and was soon joined by the hiss of more serum being dispensed directly into the tubes that ran to a port in each subject’s arm.
He flicked a wrist to minimize the projected screens and pulled the computer tablet from his coat pocket, activating the device’s recording function. As he stepped up to the first tube, he spoke in a clear and dispassionate manner. “Start log. Rheinbeck, acting chief scientist for the Evolution Project, Day 12. Serum 196. Subject A, male human, is transforming at the expected rate to female Espeon. It is abundantly clear at this point that the gene donor’s gender does have an impact on the result of this particular serum. The change of primary sex characteristics is nearing complete while some human secondary characteristics still remain. Total changes sit at approximately 50% complete, with an estimated seven more days to full transformation.”
Rheinbeck peered closely as Subject A tried to shy away in the tube. A useless gesture, as there was nowhere she could go and lights lit her brightly from all angles. “It should be noted that changes are still uneven. Subject A’s right hand, arm, leg, and foot have completely transformed to reflect the thick pads and retractable claws typical of Espeon. The left hand, foot, and leg are lagging behind but showing signs of preliminary changes such as accelerated nail growth and sharpening, and a fine layer of fur running across three toes up to the ankle.” His eyes trailed upward and he walked around the tube to get another angle. “Fur growth also extends upward across her hips and chest, and around to her back. Tail bone has extended and split to two as expected, though fur growth has not yet encased the base.
“Head transformation is promising. Both ears have extended out, each shell taking on a pointed tip. Both distinctive tufts of fur have grown from her cheeks. These may be sensitive to environmental changes, as she seems to react negatively to fluctuations in liquid nutrient flow and bubble load. Muzzle development shows extensive improvement over yesterday. Her tongue has fully flattened, dentition is proper for an Eevee evolution, and her nose has fully changed shape. However, no red gem has yet formed between her eyes. Note to staff: ensure subject’s doses of psychic suppressants are maintained to avoid potential containment breach or staff manipulation once gem begins to develop.”
He stepped to the second tube, watching as Subject B futilely pulled at his hookups in another effort to dislodge them. “Serum 404. Subject B, a male human being turned into a male Luxio, is also showing exceptionally promising progress at 48% and increasing. All limbs now exhibit soft, thick feline pads and development of retractable claws is nearly complete. Subject’s right hand and left foot are nearly fully transformed. Left hand is halfway complete, with three fingers still primarily human and two digits fully shortened into the proper length for a paw.” He looked down, where a sudden line of bubbles floating up from the tank’s aeration units caused Subject B to kick his foot in irritation. “Right foot and leg are still lagging behind the others and have not changed in four days. Note to staff: Maintain passive observation for now. If changes lag, direct application of serum at the site may be necessary.”
“Muzzle, nose, and dentition are near completion, though some molars remain human. The right eye remains human as well, but the left has completed the transition to feline. Tests show both decreased color perception and increased light sensitivity and night vision. Tail, hindquarters, and mane are coming along nicely. Readouts indicate electrical discharge levels correlating directly with mane and tail fur growth. As with Subject A, suppressants may become necessary if subject displays ability to disrupt containment system, though for now levels are well below minimum levels of concern.”
Rheinbeck paused as he stepped to the final tube, looking down at the last subject’s pleading eyes. “Finally, Serum 700. Subject C, a male human we have been working to turn into a shiny male Sylveon, shows particularly incredible promise for triggering shiny mutations in already-rare evolutionary lines despite the initial difficulty we experienced while introducing him to the testing environment. Introduction of DNA sequences from a shiny Flareon not only induced shiny characteristics in this transformation, but also introduced unanticipated yellow fur patterns at the tips of the ears, tail, and ribbons. Market analysis promises even greater profit than regular shiny mutations if results can be replicated.
“Subject C also shows faster and more even transformation than other subjects, as transformation across the body is more or less even and sits at an astonishing 59% despite starting on the same day as other subjects. Hypothesis: mutated Pokémon genes may cause the serum to have a greater effect when mutating human cells. More testing necessary. Paw pads, claws, and fur growth are going well and are almost complete.”
The half-Sylveon hybrid twisted in the tank, pressing both ribbons and paws plaintively against the glass. “Subject shows full muscle control over its tail and ribbons, indicating correct neural adaptation, and against all odds has remained cognizant and alive despite remaining in an inverted position for more than a week. Unclear at this point if this is a result of Pokémon’s’ greater physical resiliency, Ditto genes used in serum production, or the nutrient liquid’s healing capabilities. Further analysis recommended. End log.”
Rheinbeck pushed a button and slipped the tablet back into his pocket as the screen went dark, leaning against a computer to watch the subjects struggle in the tubes. He could see smaller changes starting slowly, ever so slowly, as the higher serum dose took effect. Some patches of slight fur growth here, a nail slipping further into the shape of a claw, hair shortening, almost imperceptible shifts in coloration, the slight diminishing of human features in their eyes. Yes, he had a good feeling about this batch. And after more testing, when Serum 112 was perfected… well. It was something he was looking forward to experiencing firsthand.
And the world would follow.
