Description As the school increasing switched from the DC supplied by the power plant to Grid AC from Con Ed, this MG set was installed. It was originally meant to turn the DC into AC as supplementary power, however it ended up that this was used in reverse to take Grid AC and provide DC to several Elevators still on the campus up till the late 90's. Either this or an engine was used for such purposes.

Is that so, I didn't know they could make AC with it......that means my inverter comments were completely unneccesary......how stupid.  He could have fed juice to the whole campus with this thing.

He could have, although I believe that they may have had some issues with Con Ed. They have often been as much an issue to the plant as the administration has.

Is that so.  I'd imagine that as they like having a power monopoly and NOBODY makes their own juice in NYC anymore especially using straight steam.  I think it's a case of them wanting the last holdout to buy steam and juice from them.  I can definitely see them making a fuss about "reverse current flow" or some shit.  Keep in mind if this were used to power the AC grid you would need a synchroscope and phase lights to make it interphase without blowing the entire plant up.

Well, that and the whole thing that they forced various institutions to cut up their engines and generators via the promise of low prices which suddenly went up a year or two later.  Hmm. now that I think about it I wonder if any board members have stock in Con Ed......

HOW PREDICTABLE

Shades of Dinkin's and Bloomberg's Brave NEW New York......  That would explain why the large steam engines in the basement of the Essex House vanished.......
