Description
Something a little different from the synapsid/therapod/pterosaur axis I usually spin around. Some of the new mosasaur studies coming out are pretty neat, with the fluke, scaleΒ andΒ swimming patterns changing things up. I was thinking convergence when I started putting this together, so I gave it a sort of killer whale colour scheme.

Very cool and elegant! Realistically similar to a whale while recognizably reptilian.

This is really one of your best reconstructions. And that is saying a lot, specially after your furry synapsids. The color scheme is the most likely by the way, as well as for big Ichtyosaurs. Its a good aquatic camouflage

The wonderful thing about doing an aquatic scene, is that you don't have to search forever for a good unlicensed background and then try and make it work with the animal. I've ruined so many pictures that way.

At least Jurassic World was close to that scheme. Sure Gray is a bit overused in this kind of color scheme with whales but sometimes that shade of gray or black can resemble blue or purple.

Poor Jurassic World, it's greatest praise amongst us is an "at least".

Well I didn't mind the dinosaurs not having feathers, I don't mind feathers at all but people got to remember these are genetic mutants, not full dinosaurs.

You're right of course, but didn't that mutant argument feel like a bit of a cop out?

What do you mean by that?

I know Crichton mentioned using frog DNA to fill out the genes in the novels, but didn't the way they presented in the recent movie feel like they were saying "We're going to make our dinosaurs as lizard monster dragons no matter what the facts are. You want justification? Here you go, now suck it up." to us?

Especially since I noticed Delta has DNA of birds in her, so she can at least have some feathers.

It's also got it's mouth shut and isn't attacking something, which is a radical departure from most Mosasaur illustrations, but some scientists think it had the ability to completely close it's jaws.
