The unicorn, through its intemperance and not knowing how to control itself for the love it bears to fair maidens forgets its ferocity and wildness; and laying aside all fear it will go up to a damsel and go to sleep in her lap, and thus the hunters take it. Leonardo da Vinci.Well I hope they just take it and not kill it as this is the last unicorn! never trust a fair maiden!
I wanted to experiment with some black paper I have and came up with this, used a beautiful reference for the horse pose www.deviantart.com/art/nico-an… everything else was down to me. I used black windsor and newton pastel paper and white and silver colour pencils mainly. For the moon I had play with adobe photoshop elements to help give it that glow look, I wanted to experiment you see

Thank you for taking the time to critique mashkina, I didnt want the hunter to be too obvious so left him as he is, maybe that was a mistake on my part?

Well there is no right and wrong its up to the individual, you have made some valid points. I just tried to explain what I was trying to do that's all, whether I'm successful or not is another thing

Probably I should of drawn this on larger paper so had more space to fit my original idea in, the drawing would of been clearer and easier to view. Perhaps I'll have another go at it at some point

Wow! I absolutely love the soft look of the piece and the organic lines of the unicorn's tail. The silver, white and black together looks excellent and creates a mystical ambiance. Beautiful!

that i will start draw again soon,haven`t drawed them for a while now,
becouse of some drama in the past here. But now i feel ready to do more of them again. ^^

Cool that you remember them too! They where popular back in the 90`s. But i also found really old Version back to 1969!
But they looks so silly there,omg! xD I prefer the 1990 Version i must say! ^^

I love the characters and the storys by Tove. There be a New moomin Movie next year i heard With Toves drawing style
and first book story! I can`t wait to see it. ^^ And this summer im gonna visit Finland-Moominpark,

Hi Phil, This caught my eye right away. I love working on black paper myself. I never thought of using pastel paper for colored pencil work. It works so beautifully on this type of paper.
You have done a beautiful job on using the color of the paper for volume and shadows. The detail and texture in the trees are so skillfully done. The use of the spot light source gives the entire picture a magical effect with out being overdone and adds just the right touch to the entire composition.
I've read the other comments on the unicorn tail. Even tho some say it looks un natural, I have to say I personally like how you've done it. From the view point of composition , The direction of the strokes gives the entire piece very good flow, rhythm and grace.
It leads the viewer's eye to the central focus of the main subject. Doing the maidens hair in a the same style as the unicorn's mane also adds a nice unity effect between the maiden and the unicorn.
The half hidden hunter's head in the lower corner adds suspense and makes the picture a complete story in itself Excellent illustration work!!!

It reminds me of the movie Legende/Legend with a very young Tom Cruise who played a wild boy who lives in the forest and shows his princess Lilly the unicorns. She touches one but that is forbiden.

As always this is a very nice drawing and there is something about it that i really like. But i don't know what you think you were playing at drawing the tail like that, everyone clearly knows that Unicorn's tails look nothing like that in real life
