History: No one quite knows what happened to Bernice’s mother. Some say she died, others say she ran off with another man, and some say she went mad and killed her mother-in-law. Whatever the case, Bernice grew up under the care of her brilliant father. From a young age he taught her everything he knew in hopes that she would continue his research. The day after Bernice turned 16, her father died, leaving her alone with no relatives that she knew of. Rather than publicize her father’s death, she continued to publish reports under his name as if nothing had happened. As a consequence, she often has to disguise herself as a man and refer to herself as “Walter.”
