Description con·trived –adjective
obviously planned or forced; artificial; strained

Contrived.

The image is a false statement of an emotion planned and reproduced. Grain was added; the colors altered. The pose was intended, the expression thought through. Lighting and background retried and reasoned. Wardrobe prepared.

All art is contrived. The emotions portrayed are more often than not thought through and planned in it's expression. Images are set up and practiced.

that's part of the irony of it. glad it gave you a chuckle, along with a thought; which was it's intent.

Contrived is pretension. There might be a pun in there, but it is true. There is a difference between art and things pretending to be art. Between saying something right, or saying something canned.

This is not canned. Very from-the-tree-typeishness, to expand a metaphor beyond its limits.

Your new hair is awesome.

I agree that there is much difference between a 'pretty or awesome' picture and a piece of art. True art evokes an emotion within you (probably along the type of deep longing) and doesn't make just go "ooh nice."

I am in thunderous agreement- art makes you go "I so totally know/once felt/am feeling/now know/etc that"

true dat. I like this one better than the other two together. the text is bothersome, but i understand.

Yeah, the text isn't meant to be read at face value, but rather as a medium for you to think upon.

all art is contrived.... bollocks....

but we can argue about that another day. for now, i am gonna pick my jaw up off the desk and post this to my journal. amazing stuff alex!!!

contrived has such negative connotations, but i'm using it to make a point. "planned" would be more accurate than "contrived" but honestly, does me saying "all art is planned" have as much intellectual (and perhaps emotional) impact as "all art is contrived"?

allenjmiller In reply to philosophyoftime [2007-02-07 23:38:57 +0000 UTC]

yes it does.... you are in my new journal. at least twice yayness!!!!!!

but contrived has a hugely negative connotation in my vocabulary so i wish there was another intellectually stimulating work that would work for that, because that one sounds ugh

thanks luv.

it is something that over all very negative to a lot of people. but in order to provoke the thoughts or feelings in people sometimes you have to be mean.

The scene may have been set up, but you still wanted to express something and the piece has been thought through as to create the best way to express it, without it, may the piece have been somewhat ineffective?

A nice idea Ally-smell

I agree. Without the preparation it would not be what it should be. And in that same vein I'm glad that art is thought through.

I suppose there are some art can be created in an automated way, but I suppose you could say that it is a lot rawer than art which is planned.

not exactly... is a drawing done for an animated show art? is the show then a piece of art?
