I've probably played a little of the original, but I played a lot more of its sequel, World Tour on the PS1. Great games.

Yup, and all you could do was watch helplessly and beg. Or, of course, assault the other player physically.

On the arcade cabinet I think you could toss in a quarter to come back, but on the console (NES) you had to wait for your human to make it all the way to the edge of the screen alive, then they'd get airlifted back in.
